We had the good fortune of connecting with Sylvia Stephens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sylvia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My name is Sylvia Stephens, founder of Zhane’ Cosmetics makeup line. I started doing my own makeup back in 2017 just playing around. I remember being in this relationship where I was told “you need to do your makeup today, put more makeup there, blend more here, your eyebrows don’t match, etc” basically tearing me down with words about doing my makeup everytime we would go out somewhere. It was in that moment of him making me feel as though I needed makeup to define me that I grew my passion for makeup. I lost the relationship but I found myself and my passion. From there I went and took a Makeup Class and I begin doing makeup on others. I told myself I wanted to start doing makeup for women like myself who was verbally abused and let them know makeup is not to cover up any blemishes that make you you but to ENHANCE the beauty that was already there.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Zhane’Cosmetics is not your average cosmetic line and here’s why: I don’t do makeup for the money I do it to uplift my queens of all shades that may be dealing with low self esteem or verbal abuse of not being pretty enough.

My brand is for the weak and for the strong. To the women that are mentally and emotionally weakened by a man telling them that they are not good enough. Zhane’Cosmetics is for you, to encourage you thru makeup that you are beautiful and it doesn’t have to take much. A natural Face to take the depression away. And to my strong women who some days need extra encouragement to keep them going because everyone is depending on them. Zhane’Cosmetics is for you as well, a natural Face to keep your faith.

Zhane’Cosmetics didn’t happen overnight it took a lot of crying, sleepless nights, wanting to give up every other day and encouragement/support of others to get us where we are today. We often times quote “faith without works is dead” but don’t put in the work. If I had to leave anyone reading this with something I would say this PUT IN THE WORK CONSISTENTLY!

And remember this, anyone that is successful didn’t become successful overnight lots of trial and error. Zhane’Cosmetics went thru a name change, logo change, color change, an entire rebrand and we are yet growing. One thing that I learned about being an entrepreneur is every entrepreneur has their on path they have to follow even if they are in the same field. Some may have did it in 10yrs others may have did it in 2yrs but stay the course, stay consistent and Don’t let the timing of others success dictate your success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Underneath the business owner Sylvia, there is the fun, funny, spontaneous Sylvia who just enjoys a good time.

Any time a friend or family member come in town first things first we have to go eat. Now I love to eat and I love trying new places so we going wherever neither one of us haven’t tried lol. After we eat we definitely have to go bowling. It’s something about a women bowling strikes in nails for me lol. Then we going to Dave and Busters, theme park, indoor go kart racing. Let’s just say when coming in town to hang with me we having a good adventurous time with lots of eating so prepare to go on a diet when you leave lol.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ahhhh first giving honor to God because without him I wouldn’t even have this moment so I’m truly grateful for all he’s done and is doing in my life.

However, I have to shoutout my mentor who is also my Godmom is who helped birth me into the women I am today. Along with a lot of other women god placed in my life. I recall the late nights and early mornings of me crying and wanting to give up because I believed that my business wasn’t growing fast enough or I wasn’t getting as many views and liked as others would and my Godmom would tell me, “baby if you just reach 1 you have done your job”. Ever since she spoke those words I decided to change the culture of Makeup by encouraging and uplifting women all over the world 1 Face at a time.
