Meet Sylvia Scruggs: DUI School Owner, Director & Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sylvia Scruggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sylvia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Since I had been teaching the DUI Risk Reduction and Driver Improvement curriculums since 2014 from other schools, I wanted to open a school of my own in the Lithonia/Stonecrest area and provide the same social services that meet the needs of our citizens, community groups, and court requirements through a unique learning experience. Also, I wanted to extend opportunities to my family and friends that they would not have received if I hadn’t paved the way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A Class Act DUI & Defensive Driving School, Inc. is owned, directed, and staffed by a proud HBCU Savannah State Alumni (1988) and a Master Teacher (Mercer University 2012). Our flexibility and professionalism is what sets our services apart from others. Certified by Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS), we offer social services that meet the needs of our citizens, community groups, and court requirements through a unique learning experience.
Honestly, I am where I am because of the Grace and Mercy of God! I owe it all to Him and I simply help others help themselves. I am mostly inspired by one of the many quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:
“…everybody can be great because greatness is determined by service…You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.”
One of the lessons I have learned along the way is that is doesn’t cost a thing to be nice and a smile and warm spirit goes a long way. People want to trust our services and not be judged.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friend comes to town for the weekend, Friday night we will dine at our favorite spot Pappadeaux. On Saturday afternoon, we will attend a local praise and worship service. Afterwards, we visit The Auburn Avenue Research Library to attend a special forum on African American Culture and History located in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn Historic District. Then we would grab a bite at Slutty Vegan and later finish the night attending a play at a community college presented by local college students. There’s always something to do in the ATL!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Special shoutout to Kenneth M. Scruggs who took my vision and turned it into a reality. He created a unique, comfortable office space that feels more like home. Thanks to Herbert and Cynthia Greene who gave me the opportunity to facilitate their classes and made it possible to learn all aspects of the business. Of course, thanks to all of the other dui schools around the metro-Atlanta area where I’ve taught and gained confidence perfecting my instructional strategies. Most importantly, a special thanks to my family, friends, and the community in which I have served since 2016!
