We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzanne Aaron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Suzanne, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
One of the books we encourage our coaches to read – and is worthy of an annul reread – is “Ego is the Enemy” by Ryan Holiday. It reminds us that we must evaluate by our own standards, not on what others see or think, or what the immediate results may be. Always looking for the greater good..
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One of the great things about our organization is that our coaches were clients first. Coming from this perspective, it helps us be more compassionate and understanding of the process itself. We also recognize that not one single method works for every dog/handler team. People process and learn in different ways and understanding that is crucial to what we do.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our Tails of Hope village is built on a foundation of having a respectful and inclusive environment where we are committed to the training of ADA compliant service dogs. We have a commitment to animal welfare and believe that working on continuous improvement is essential to our organization. WE also love collaborating with other organizations to enhance the collective impact on both animal and people welfare .
Tails of Hope Service Dogs is a true team effort. For years we were volunteering/training for another organization and felt motivated to create our own service dog program where we could expand the training and create a bigger impact for people and dogs in need. Our coaches (we call them coaches instead of dog trainers because we are truly coaching people), come from a variety of backgrounds and professions and are all volunteers. Many of them were clients first and are now teaching! One thing we all have in common is that we have a desire to help both animals and people and make a difference in the world. We have a variety of people from different walks of life, different ages, different trauma experiences and different ways of communicating so that we can match a coach to a client and their dog for the best success. We actively engage in educational efforts to promote responsible pet ownership, proper animal care, and the importance of spaying/neutering to reduce overpopulation. In addition we work with many organizations to talk about appropriate service dog etiquette and how to properly identify and act around service dog teams in public.
