We had the good fortune of connecting with Susy Oludele and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I really wanted to do hair and art since I was a kid I’ve always used to do hair on my dolls and I used to take pictures of creative people in my neighborhood. I’ve always used to sell clothes. I was always creating tutorials on YouTube and one day one of my videos went viral and the rest was history. I started to better myself growing up with Nigerian Parents they tell you to be a lawyer or a doctor, so I definitely wanted to start my own journey. I got laid off as a Home health aide and I worked at McDonald’s for about a week, and I started to just go into hair and creative art full-time. It was the best decision of my life!
What should our readers know about your business?

We also created a community program for the homeless and people in shelters in glam makeovers and gifting care packages. Hairbysusy is now in Los Angeles, New York and pretty soon Atlanta. we provide hair extensions, beauty products , hair services , nail services and fashion!
In Building Hair by Susy, There was a lot of trial and error in creating Hair by Susy. The leadership needed work, I was young and full of ego, and I had to learn the hard way. I lost everything then had to build everything back by investing into myself, my mind and my community. I also had to learn a lot about business, and how to leverage the work and art. I know now that what it takes to be a leader is definitely creating structure, showcasing care, helping others, being kind to others and spreading love.
In the mist of me, creating Hairbysusy, I was homeless, sleeping on peoples couches, taking showers at the gym, trying to figure out where I would be having nobody to support and I believe with faith in God, I was able to come out of the building name for myself my community.
I want People to know that whatever you are passionate about you can turn into a business and also you can help the community and the world with whatever you decide that you want to do. Don’t give up and always put your happiness first and even through the storm there will be sunny days!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was in town we would have the best time ever I would first take them to slutty vegan to have some burgers then I will take them to the arcade so we can play and enjoy games and go crazy. After that I will take them to do karaoke and enjoy a great music.
Then for dinner I will take them to Lagos Lounge for afrobeats and african food for the vibes!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to Kathy Clarke for showing me the way into natural hair and showing me that you can create art using black hair.
