We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Ball and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk plays a major role in both my life and career! As a landscaping designer, I face the challenges of always giving my clients the best creations. As a black woman owned company, we employ and mentor other black women who strive, just as I do, to become better versions of themselves. One of the biggest risks I face is buyer’s remorse. This is hard, back-breaking work that I do and what I want is for my clients to understand what their part in our business relationship is. That’s why clients of Mr & Mrs are educated on what it takes to protect the longevity of their investments. I listen to my clients’ concerns and now offer maintenance plans and financing options to ease their minds. There are other risks that I share with my clients. As much as my passion shows through my work, there is always the chance of bad weather or anything that impacts the survival of landscaping. On a personal note, a risk that affects me the most is the relationships with my clients. I make sure that my know that once the season starts, the relationship starts and once the season ends, the relationship does not.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart, is that I specialize in raised flower beds. I use a mixture of carefully curated elements to create seasonal designs. My designs can be admired from any angle. I focus on color, texture, smell, positioning and movement. I make sure that the two most important ingredients are ALWAYS present in my designs…a specialized mixture of soil compost to enhance the beauty and growth and a plentiful water source. I have exclusive relationships with growers and greenhouses that allow me to select only the best farm-raised flowers. Another distinguishing feature of my designs is the use of big head rocks. My clients often tell me that anyone can recognize a “Mr & Mrs” design.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite past time outside of landscaping is spending quality time with my family and beloved German Rotweiler, Bently. I love the company of diverse groups of people, venues with valet parking, mouth-watering steaks and scalloped potatoes, yum. For date night, I enjoy the ambience and exquisite service of Arnette’s Chop Shop. They have the best steaks and their roasted corn and bacon is to die for! You may catch me out for a day of pampering at Cleopatra Nails or just driving down the parkway with my windows down and the wind blowing through my blonde hair. I also love outdoor jazz concerts and an all-around relaxing evening with my closest friends admiring their scapes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I get my inspiration from God first. My mother, Ms. Edda Rose Feimster continues to show me the ways of life. I also thrive from the love and support from my daughter, Hayven Carrie, Terrence Hall the Mr of Mr & Mrs, Detron and Darrick Burch, owners of Byram’s Homecare, Tracy Wilson of Level 11 Event Planning, and Jennie of Flintwood Farms. Finally, I would like to express an special thank you to The Claybourns with A.R.T Entertainment for recommending that I share my story with you. I am honored.
