We had the good fortune of connecting with Sunja Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sunja, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I love Spanish. I love teaching and have loved tutoring since high school. When I first moved to Atlanta and told people what I do and so many people asked me if I have a business and if I could help them learn Spanish. So the summer of 2015, I decided to start my business teaching, tutoring, and creating customized learning resources for my clients.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is Tailored Tutor Language Services aka TTLANGS, where we tailor our products to meet clients’ Spanish needs. What sets us apart is the focus on Spanish. We teach, tutor, translate, and create customized resources for businesses and traditional students of all ages. I am most proud of the fact that my students leave the series of sessions more confident and with the knowledge and ability they need in order to communicate in Spanish. I’m most excited about putting out resources for the masses so that there will be more value and exposure brought to the company! We are in the process of creating printed Spanish resources and video classes for everyone who wants to learn Spanish in various areas like real estate, medical, and travel!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I wanted to give the best time ever, we’d do a morning drive to Stone Mountain and meditate at the top. Then we’d head right over to the New Black Wallstreet and patronize the plethora of black businesses there. And we’d end the night at Ponce City Rooftop for food, drinks, and games!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to shoutout Atlanta! It might sound crazy, but had I never moved to Atlanta, I’m not sure if I would have had the motivation and encouragement to start my business. Seeing all the beautiful black excellence around me was something I had never experienced before! Keith Heard, Jr. was Instrumental in me getting my business started on paper and I’m forever grateful. I got connected to so many business owners and I was able to learn a lot. Shoutout to books, Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I also have to mention my own book, Overcoming the Odds: a story of tragedy, trauma, and triumph!
