We had the good fortune of connecting with Suerence Marcelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suerence, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My business first started as a hobby. As I started to bake more for family and friends, through word of mouth, I was asked to bake for their friends or kids birthday’s. When I decided to move forward as a business I knew that I wanted to bring quality work to my craft and have a focus point for my business. Was I going to focus on birthdays and weddings or just treats? So I decided that dessert tables and custom cakes would be my focal point and it’s been amazing for my business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My bakery is called This Little Light Bakery & Caribbean Delights. I love to play around with flavors of the seasonings we cook with and challenge myself to balance them with some sweetness. I’m excited to bring a whole new brand of desserts to my line of baked goods. Recently I’ve been working more with pastries and what I like to call “flavor play”. Who would have thought that Rosemary with thyme and hibiscus with orange could go together and make a delicious sweet dessert?! Growing up with a Caribbean background my household was always stocked with these amazing flavors so when I’m trying to find a new flavor combination I’m always thinking of Caribbean and Indian flavors that would balance well with a dessert.

My business journey has been an uphill adventure since I first started. There were many learning curves along the way and I enjoyed learning new sides to the business world. I would take any learning opportunity that would help advance myself and help someone else. For startups I recommend learning the tax write-offs you can get for your business and learn how to price your products properly. Don’t cheat yourself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve been living in metro Atlanta for most of my life and I still act like a tourist to this day. Atlanta has soo many cool hangout spots I wouldn’t have time to name all, but the first stop has to be Ponce City Market where we can eat a plethora of foods from different countries then take a stroll on the beltline and grab a beer. We’d hit up Sandbox for some virtual reality excitement. Then I take them on an ATV adventure at Clover Land Ranch.

My favorite dining spots would be anywhere with a rooftop overlooking the city and Atlanta Steak Market.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my parents for allowing me to use their kitchen which is where I started my business.
