We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Dotson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steven, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Upon establishing my enterprise, my perspective wasn’t centered on “starting a business.” Instead, I perceived it as addressing a personal challenge and extended the solution to a broader audience. As I became aware of the advantages and security of operating a legitimate business, my self-perception evolved to that of a business owner.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My professional background is in Information Technology. I work for a Consulting Firm in metro Atlanta as a Director of End User Support and Facilities Operations.

The most rewarding aspect of my position within the firm is it allows me to mentor and develop young talent, preparing them for the next chapter in their career.

As for my brand, Where You From Apparel, I want individuals to be proud of where they came from. We are all a product of our upbringing, and no matter where life takes us, my brand will always allow you to have a piece of home with you, and you can represent it proudly.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Exploring Atlanta’s vibrant offerings is a delightful experience. As a passionate cigar aficionado, our itinerary would include a visit to Fellaship, owned by Cam Newton, and other noteworthy black-owned cigar lounges across the city.

The Breakfast Boys in College Park would be an excellent choice for brunch. Lunchtime calls for a flavorful adventure at Hattie B’s, renowned for its Nashville Hot Chicken. Come evening, Rock Steady awaits for a satisfying dinner, followed by an ascent to the club upstairs for a blend of great music and drinks.

To ensure a well-rounded exploration, must-see places include the impactful Civil Rights Museum and the enlightening King Center. Additional highlights encompass the scenic Ponce City Market rooftop, a leisurely stroll along the Beltline, a visit to the picturesque Piedmont Park, and immersing in the art and culture of First Friday at the High Museum. Atlanta offers a diverse array of experiences catering to both culinary preferences and cultural interests.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like first to thank my mother, Diane Dotson, and my daughter, Jordan Dotson. There are too many people to name, but a special shout out to Andre Minor for spotlighting me for this article. I would like to shout out my hometown, Milwaukee, WI, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. brothers in Atlanta, and my foundation friends, who have kept me humble for over 35+ years of friendship.
