We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Korn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steve, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I feel in many ways that an artistic/creative career chose me. I’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD, something I long suspected, and upon reflection have come to realize that I am very fortunate to do what I do. ADHD can be a super power for creativity, always seeing things in different ways, problem solving and an innate sense of curiosity about everything. I don’t think I would have done well in a conventional career, sitting behind a desk all day. Additionally, as is typical with ADHD, there is a need for almost constant stimulation; a desire to try things differently, experiment etc. Hyper-focus is another plus of the condition, the ability to really deep dive into something and see its creative potential.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am fascinated by the human condition and love to see people achieve that which that thought might be impossible. I photograph many artists, musicians, dancers, athletes and so on. The idea that human beings are forever pushing their own potential amazes me. and I think seeing people doing the incredible resonates with every one of us. We all have a voice and when we hear someone sing beautifully, it is an expression of humanity we can all relate to. We might not sing as well as that person, or jump as high or run as fast, but the potential is there and continues to expand. That there are new songs written and new photographs and paintings created after so many years is a testament to the inextinguishable creativity of humans.
I think my fascination with this and my desire to express it in images is a key to my success which resonates with others. What drives someone else might be different, but if it comes from an honest place, I think that is what separates what each of us does and makes it meaningful.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I don’t believe in the notion of people solely pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. There is almost always someone, and often many, along the way who has helped us: a parent or sibling, a good friend, teacher who took a couple extra minutes to answer a question, my wife who has always supported my dreams…I have had many people who gave me an opportunity, even when I didn’t realize it was happening. I know I am privileged in this regard. I am a white man in his 50’s who has been given opportunities many have not. I try to live by my motto, “How Can I Help”, and even have HCIH tattooed on my wrist as a reminder to look for opportunities to help others get further along their path. There are far too many people to whom I am indebted for helping me along the way and I just hope to be that someone for others.
