We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steve, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Acting has always been my goal. While working for Walmart, Tyler Perry Studios was on my mind 24/7. My dream of the entertainment world played over/over in my head……and well, I took a leap of faith and took my 401k and started my journey. I succeeded.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is my heart. My determination for what I want is inevitable. Living 3hrs south of Atlanta, I’d drive up. Film. Drive home to some nights sleeping on the side of the highway. Not having a place to stay or knowing anybody to sleep on their couch, I’d go until my eyes couldn’t see, but it wasn’t hard, i made it easy because I wanted this path since i could remember. I’m excited about myself because I did it, I made it, I’m doing what I always wanted to do for myself and my family. Lessons I’ve learned is to not work with just ANYBODY. I want the world to know if a highschool dropout like myself can make it into Tyler Perry studios and work his way up the mountain to success. Anybody can, if they believe. Keep GOD first, and you will succeed.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Downtown ferris wheel, The battery/truist park, MLK Jr church/rest area. I love the ponce city market for starters!. Atlanta beltline is good for the soul as well. I’m still learning my way around Atlanta, but there’s def tons to do!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A woman who played a huge part in my life was Gussie Mae Smith, who once told me I could get into Tyler Perry Studios if I stayed persistent and pushed myself. 3yrs ago I did just what she said I’d do (I love you) which lead me to meet Michelle Lamb. After performing on sets with Michelle, she introduced me to Palmer Williams jr (Floyd from Tyler Perry house of payne) the rest is a miracle. I love y’all and I’m forever grateful for you.
