We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Kirkland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Huemanity Studios was created due to my passion for art. I’ve always enjoyed all avenues of art. I feel like it provides a creative outlet and unites people.

Initially, I provided pop up parties at clubs, homes and restaurants. The business continued to grow so it was time for a brick and mortar.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The art I create tends to be fun and vibrant. I feel like women of color aren’t portrayed in “traditional” artwork, so I focus a lot on creating pieces that show all aspects of those women and focus on things that are culturally relevant to my audience.

Before deciding to focus solely on my art, I worked several other positions that helped to bring me to where I am today. I studied Fine Art and Marketing while at Auburn in Montgomery. After graduating I took on a role as a Graphic Designer and Art Director.
This position helped me to harness my creative abilities at and learn to work at a quick pace. After leaving that job I worked in Retail Management and sales. These roles helped me to master the backend of business operations. All of these things have been extremely helpful in operation my own studio.

Since opening, we have focused on becoming the hub for art in North Huntsville. We aim to inspire the community to see the beauty in the small things and to provide a creative outlet for all ages to explore new avenues of art.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie were visiting, we would plan for a day of fun. We never get up early so we would start with Brunch at Below the Radar. Their breakfast casserole is everything! We would follow that up with a little bit of shopping out at Bridge Street Town Centre. Our final stop would be 4th Quarter Revamp to enjoy a grown folks party with Dj Marc “Boss” Patton. It’s always good music, good drinks and good vibes!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my father, Arnold Kirkland. He was always my biggest supporter and would always tell me “ Baby girl, follow your dreams”!
