We had the good fortune of connecting with Southside Steve Rickman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Southside Steve, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always wanted no ceiling on my income and knowing that upset me. I’ve worked jobs to pay the bills, but I have an entrepreneurial spirit. I’ve started a family business and a bar chasing independent wealth. My most successful run has been a 30 year radio career in Atlanta that is still continuing with a Independent radio group for the past year. Corporate radio has changed so much and the ability to cover what people want to hear has been taking away. My radio persona and my trade marked Yeah C’mon has allowed me to chase some creative dreams. I’m doing a podcast, radio morning show, and have a bourbon whisky. These are all start ups and take a lot of energy which I have at 59 years of age still. My wife is 22 years younger and a stay at home wife to our 6 and 3 year old sons.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I worked for Atlantic Southeast Airlines for 3 years starting in May of 1986 at Hartsfield Airport and ran the radio on the ramp parking planes. I would say things like “Palms Trees Forever” and “Yeah C’mon” on the mic to the gate at D Concourse and Operations before clearing or deplaning an aircraft. the phrase Yeah C’mon was catching on and became my tagline. Getting into Atlanta Radio years later I used Yeah C’mon on-air with the morning shows I worked on at 96ROCK, 106.7COUNTRY, and ROCK100.5. So, when I opened Southside Steve’s Bar it was a part of my T-Shirts and Hats and my staff wore Yeah C’mon Shirts too. I started a YeahC’mon.com to sale merchandise and now have launched a Bourbon Whisky thru Legends Distilling in Cumming Ga. called Yeah C’mon! My brand is YEAH C’MON and it started on the ramp at what is now Hartsfield Jackson Airport.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have lived all over the Atlanta Metro and now live in Milton Ga. so, I would take them to the restaurants in our area and same with music venues. The Sun Dial has always been special to me for the view and what was the tallest building in Atlanta when I was a teenager, so that would be a night out.. The World of Coke and depending the time of year a game at Mercedes or Truist if the teams were in town. I lived in Castleberry Hill for 15 years and love No Mas restaurant for the best ambience. Then you have to climb Stone Mountain!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I want to thank Me for believing in myself and always being positive, and fearless to life’s possibilities.. Also, to say I’m sorry to my late father Louis J Rickman for a failed business and choosing badly when it came to business partners. My Atlanta radio career was started with the help of Rich Van Slyke and Christopher Rude along with the kindness of Michael Hughes and Tom Connolly al from WKLS 96ROCK! Thanks to the Regular Guys on 96ROCK and ROCK100.5 for the morning show that truly launched my brand. Tim Rhodes who I had the must fun with on our afternoon show Southside and Rhodes on 96ROCK. The morning shows I finished corporate radio on Bailey and Southside along with my friend Axel on The Axel and Southside Show on ROCK100.5 which was a blast, Being and Eagle Scout and a Athlete playing First Division Soccer in Atlanta made me loyal and a team player. Dating so many women let me know my wife Amanda Rickman was the one for me. My children Brooks and Parker have made Amanda and I whole and the happiest I have ever been. Yeah C’mon to all those I’ve had a conversation with and those I have worked with for a day or years. I Do What I Do When I Do It!
