We had the good fortune of connecting with Soo Oh Bang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Soo Oh, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I began working in the film industry, I aimed to achieve a balanced approach between my professional and personal life. However, I soon realized that in the film industry, schedules are subject to frequent changes, and project timelines can be unpredictable. Consequently, I had to adapt my approach to prioritize intense focus during work periods and seize opportunities for rest whenever they arose.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

My approach to filmmaking centers around creating the kind of films that resonate deeply with me personally. It is challenging to discover films that align perfectly with my tastes. Therefore, when I embark on a film project, I’m driven by the desire to craft something that I genuinely love. This often begins in the early stages of scriptwriting, where I immerse myself in the process until I can feel a profound connection and visualize its potential on screen.
My journey as a filmmaker started with a simple desire: to create content that resonated with me. Experimenting with combining music and footage, even before shooting anything myself, allowed me to explore how these elements could evoke emotions. Collaborating with friends on video projects further fueled my passion. Through sharing my work and enthusiasm with others, I gradually gained recognition, connecting with like-minded individuals who shared my creative energy.
As a director, my ultimate goal is to leave a lasting impact on audiences through my works. Whether it’s a fleeting moment or a profound realization, I hope my work sparks contemplation and stays with viewers long after they’ve watched it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to all the incredible crew members I’ve had the privilege of working with. As a director, I understand that without their dedication and expertise, none of our accomplishments would have been possible. Every decision I made was the result of collaborative discussions with the crew. Their creativity and hard work truly brought our films to life, and I am immensely grateful for their contributions.
