We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonya Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sonya, what do you want your legacy to be?
The legacy that I want to leave behind is to be able to build a future and a foundation for those who come after me. I want my daughter and those who come after her to know that I have paved a way for them to have a firm foundation. I want them to remember I did everything with joy and heart. Also that when I failed I got back up and always believed in myself even if no one else did. If you work hard, love hard and do things for the benefit of others you will always be successful.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I worked hard and pressed harder. I have never been one to sit back and collect. I have never felt anyone owed me anything. I worked my way up, created my seat and built my own table. It was never easy but the fire inside of me would not burn out. The challenges I have faced was not having enough capital to support a growing business or knowing the right people. I overcame my challenges by putting myself out there even when I was afraid, ignored or told no. I knew as long as I thought it was possible and kept pressing on that some day it would happened. I put myself out there and showed up whether it was big or small. I remained focused on what was in front of me and stayed in my lane. I also have learned that no one gives you hand outs but putting yourself out there and asking for what you want and need can open doors. I want the world to know that my story is not unique rather it’s a story of never giving up hope in yourself. My brand is the result of perseverance.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was to visit my area I would rent out a cozy beach home in Carmel. We would indulge in fine dining and delicious wine. We would go on my favorite bike ride along 17mile drive and indulge in the beautiful scenery. Most importantly I would enjoy heart to heart conversations with my friend beach front with a view of the lovely Carmel coast.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My instructors at EQ school of Hair Design were instrumental in my drive. They believed in me when know one else did. They pushed and encouraged me. They commended me and helped me recognize the gifts that I had and nurtured them. Also as of recent a dear friend named Sharise. She has been instrumental in sharing helpful advice along the way but more importantly been a true friend and inspiration.
