We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonya Everett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonya, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m adopted, born in LA and I’ve moved around 5 times because of my dads job. Since moving out at 18 I’ve moved around 6 more times. I never felt like I fit in or more importantly I didn’t accept myself as I was. I was constantly comparing who I was to everyone else. When I started making music, I made it with the intention of creating songs I needed to hear when I was younger. I continue to do this and use my music to heal my inner child and give myself a place to land, no matter where I am.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been through a lot in my life, mental illness, abuse, chronic pain, addiction, loss – all of this brought me down to the lowest I’ve ever been but I was able To keep going. Not because music, not because someone believed in me, but because I made a choice that I wanted my life to change. I made a choice that no matter what I go through, I can get through it, because I said so. Every single one of my songs is a reflective piece. Every single song has healed me in a way nothing else can. I’m so excited to share my music with the world. I hope somebody can listen to my story and see themselves. So that I’m not only heal ing myself, I can heal you too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the morning I’d take you to cafe mustache for breakfast wraps and an iced chai. Then we’d go thrift shopping in wicker and Logan square. My favorite is village discount. After that I’d want to get lunch at stop-a-long. They do a burger and shit for $15. We’d drop our stuff at my house then travel down to Hyde park. All my friends are down there so maybe we’d do a bit of house hopping. We’d grab something Togo in the neighborhood before we make our way to the lake. Promontory Point has the fire pits. We’d chill there till we gotta make our way back up north. If you’re still up to hang we could go back to cafe mustache for karaoke or Cole’s to play pool and watch someone preform.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My best friends, Fable and Bri Palmer. My bonus mom Adey, the book 101 ways to change the way you think. The first person I ever worked with for music, Ksenia – the best engineer in chicago.
