We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonja Crystal Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonja Crystal, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Nurturing relationships. Every business owner should look at themselves as being in the “relationship” business. As the co-founder of a digital marketing agency, I truly believe in the power of building audiences online, but it means nothing if there are no relationships cultivated from there. Part of the courage to leave my full-time employer while starting this business was stepping outside of my comfort zone to begin networking and building relationships with complete strangers.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When we launched our business over a decade ago, we did it with minimal planning and took an entirely grassroots approach to build it. For aspiring entrepreneurs, I would encourage you to have a plan in place! A few of my significant challenges included finding the right support as our company grew and keeping a consistent pipeline of our ideal clients. We overcame the challenge of finding the right support with a bit of luck and intention. I was lucky to find a close friend who believed in my vision and has provided part-time support to us for many years. With intention, we’ve attracted new talent that shares similar values and goals. We believe in hiring entrepreneurial-types who don’t require micromanagement. I simply want people to get the job done and be self-responsible. To find our ideal clients, many of them have come directly through our website or LinkedIn. Social media has proven to be incredibly valuable because your clients can review you, your work, and your work style in advance and already come to you with some thoughts about whether or not it’s a fit.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a big traveler and I do also love being in Atlanta. Whenever friends visit, I take them to experiences that I think they would enjoy. For self-care, I love visiting Jeju Spa a few times a year and then making a day of it and going to restaurants along Buford Highway such as Dish and Sweet Hut. My favorite Italian restaurant is Bellina Alimentari which is located in Ponce City Market. And while at Ponce City Market, I usually love to spend time walking on the Beltline and maybe even stopping for ice cream or some other dessert along the way. I live on the Westside Trail of the Beltline, so when I want to show friends my neighborhood we head over to Boxcar or Spice House and walk that side of the Beltline.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This might sound like a cliche, but I am blessed to have an amazing partner in life who has inspired me. In the early days of launching this business, my husband and I spent a ton of time developing ourselves and we still do to this day. He’s encouraged me and truly inspired me in many ways. Through his support and my determination, I’ve been able to shift my mindset in many ways to become a better version of myself. This helps me serve clients, friends, and family so much more. If I could suggest a few great books that have also inspired me, they would be: Think and Grow Rich, 4-Hour Work Week, and The Brand Story.
