We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonita Michelle Gray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonita Michelle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was inspired by my clients and their needs. I wanted to be able to offer them skincare products for at home that were safe, effective, and that I could stand behind, so I created Skin Techs.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Licensed Aesthetician, I started my career in cosmetic sales in 2005 selling Avon and then Mary Kay in 2008. I wanted to get more serious about my career so in 2014 I enrolled in the Aesthetics program at Miller Motte Technical and finished in 2016. It was not easy for me as there is was only one other black female students who graduated with our class, which caused some serious discussions about African America and ethnic skin and other touchy topics. It became apart of my mission to break those barriers within our community and others as well. Black women can do skin and beauty and we have for centuries but have somehow been left behind the scenes. My brand represents the future of black women in aesthetics and skin.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely check out Stir located downtown and Station Street for food and drinks as you can scroll and have a drink and a delicious meal on the patio at Stir! For a fun night out dinner at the Boathouse, located right on the river and then Chattanooga Cigar Club for drinks, hookah, and great music!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my clients! If it were not for their support of my spa business and trusting me with their skin, I would not be this far in my career:
