We had the good fortune of connecting with Solomon “9k” Edmondson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Solomon “9k”, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Tbh perusing music career was a huge risk in it self. I had to move out on own change my major, and bet on my networking skills. Everyone knows that trying to maintain a sustainable lifestyle from a music job can have its challenges. But I feel like it’s all about finding what makes it worth it for yourself and remembering why you love to do what you do. I love to compose because it gives me this life energy of sorts. Being able to create something from nothing is really fulfilling and I surprise my self with my work every time. In addition, I like composing because it allows me to help bring out the best in artists. In my process I try to encourage artists to take risks with their lyrics, putting more of their personal feelings and thoughts into the music. The same goes for the composition as well, as I experiment with unconventional sounds to produce something that sounds new and fresh to my ears. Music has definitely grown and changed a lot over time and will continue to as long as the people involved in it continue to take risks
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Looking back, there were definitely a few challenges I had to conquer to get to where I am today. The funny thing is that I figured out that the hardest challenges were the internal ones. I feel like If you really have the passion and drive for something you love, just remember to take care of yourself, stay consistent, and never forget to pray. Everything you’re looking for will come in time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in the city are Jeni’s Icecream, The Battery, Old 4th Skate park, Restoration Studios, and Cumberland Mall.
I feel like the best schedule would start with creating in the studio every morning and participating in their mentorship program on Thursdays and Fridays. Then after the sun goes down a bit, heading to the skate park to ride around and try new tricks while avoiding a visit to Grady! The night would probably end by heading to the battery to grab some food or sliding to Jeni’s for some awesome icecream
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a big shoutout to a student organization on GSUs campus called NCEG. The primary goal is to give students an accurate experience of what being involved in the music industry is like. The skill sets students can develop encompass almost any job you could get in the music business. Being a part of the org also allowed me to meet so many other creatives that were serious about their endeavors in media and music. I encourage anyone that attends GSU to go check them out! NCEG also has chapters at Ga Tech, Emory, The AUC and more!
