We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sofia, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started off in my career I felt like I had a lot to prove. I didn’t want to come across as living in the clouds for taking a unique parth, or seem ungrateful for the faith and opportunities I had been afforded in life by my Ghanaian immigrant parents. Although well intended, it caused me to lack the understanding I needed for a healthy work life balance. Also because, I didn’t see it much as a Black woman.

I thought the world would stop if I didn’t reach every goal within my twenties and it really took a toll on my physical and mental health. Fast forward to my recent thirties and I put my life, health and wellness first as much as possible. I still have to work constantly against the cultural mindset of “grinding” but at least now I’m aware of it to do the opposite. These days I’m much more interested in focusing on Sofia, the human “being” God created me to be, and I deeply believe that a thriving career will follow.

What should our readers know about your business?
I didn’t know that I could have a career that came as natural to me as PR Strategy and management through Project Development. Although I’ve never imagined I would do just one thing, I didn’t realize the depths of the amount of things I would be able to do. And the fact that my focused multiplicity would also be what sets me apart. I have a keen ability to focus on multiple things well at once, and I am typically aware of how the present affects the future. I’ve learned to embrace these callings. It wasn’t always easy to identify my gifts because I did not know them well enough to recognize them at play in others. Or at least I wasn’t taught to.

That has still been difficult for me, to know that I am gifted in multiple areas, but not exactly knowing when or how to use each gift. When I feel this way I focus on what is in front of me right now, and what is God possibly trying to work out in me to get to the next level? Ironically this question comes at a time when I am re-examining my career and what I want to do next. I know that there is no limit, but I’m taking my time to be more still and more aligned than ever before. People should know that you have the freedom to pivot, and you can hone in on more than one thing, even if at different times.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve often gone to ATL for business trips and conferences. I love how the city has become a hub for Black professionals to connect with the best from all over. I would recommend checking out anything related to your field happening in the ATL. You truly never know who you will meet!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out my parents, friends, and mentors for loving me unconditionally. I have been blessed with the most incredible community. God has truly fortified me with himself and people in ways that have built and sustained my confidence. And I hope I can be that person to others as well.
