We had the good fortune of connecting with Socorro Kenoly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Socorro, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
I see Madame Fairy’s Cabaret being an asset to the world perspective on Sex Education. I want people to look at the Cabaret and say, “I related/learned and I was entertained.” When people take part in our programs, I want them to feel prepared with resources. I see our efforts saving people from health issues starting or becoming worse. By the end of my career, I want the world to see Madame Fairy as a staple of health in the community as well as entertainment that helps allow the classics to live on for ages. I see my career opening doors for so many others in the entertainment and spiritual health industries. That’s what I consider an indelible mark on the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I want the world to know I took a different path because everywhere I tried to fit in, I stood out. I had no choice but to create my own lane. I had always been in tune with my sexuality on a spiritual level. A lot of times, that is seen in our community as taboo. Although I was always an extremely private person, I needed a way to bridge all the things I felt were important into one conglomerate to help others. I learned countless lessons going through abusive relationships, exploring my sexuality and just simply being an empath to the world’s issues. I had also always been a performer. I started dancing at 3 years old. I had always took an interest in sex education- but not the textbook version- which leaves people with little tangible knowledge to get through actual life.

I had always felt like my expression was stifled. My affinity for the deeper side of pop culture- the messages we find in art and how they reflect the times we live in- made me want to use media to teach. We as people learn so much from the things we watch, listen to and those we see as heroes. Why couldn’t I use a song like Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid and Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got to Do With It? to dissect the meaning of life and love for someone in one lesson. Ariel for example longed for human life while Tina Turner felt and lived all the ups and downs of human life. Not everyone will get it, but someone out there gets it. I love that I get to recreate art that everyone already loves and make it even more meaningful.

I got to where I am today by taking control of my own life and not letting the world tell me how I can entertain. That love for creating things my way set in in college at Hampton University where I helped curate for an annual competition called Battle of the States- essentially every region is represented and competes for bragging rights until the next year. That’s when I realized the impact I could make and how I had a talent for curation.

I was always using my online platform to connect people with my message. At first with my Sex Chat Saturdays where I would go Live on Instagram and discuss sex in a comprehensive, trauma informed and safe setting. But then, it was like catching lightning in a bottle when my message of “Black Pussy Supremacy” took over the merchandise game on my Instagram. I just had an idea for a sports bra and I was frustrated with the murder of Breonna Taylor. Black Pussy Supremacy was like activism for me, but the message in owning our being and our sexuality just stuck. I sold out in weeks. That was the beginning of Voodoo Cat- my lounge-wear line and the tangible birth of thesexedfairy.com. I was expanding my messages in so many ways- throwing virtual and live events, merchandise, small performances.

I can’t wait to bring my ideas to life on a larger scale with a full blown Cabaret. My Impostor Syndrome has been a big part of what has held me back, but I am proud of the small steps I have taken in my career. At some point, you have to stop letting the world box you in. Even if you’re not the BEST- you’re you. That’s your super power. Being a “starving artist” can be challenging, but it has its spiritual perks. I know one day, my bank account will reflect my impact. I took the harder way but I love being true to myself.

Whatever I am involved in- I focus on fully. It’s not fair to these companies for me to fake it as a worker. I couldn’t keep focusing on things I couldn’t care less about. I have to take that energy and focus it on my dreams. Feed and fuel MY own empire. I am not the pinned up sex doctor from the textbooks. That’s far from freedom FOR ME. I’m not knocking them, I just know what resonates with me and so many others is AUTHENTICITY- not this so called “professionalism” that’s just another form of respectability politics affirmed in the white gaze. That may be a controversial statement but that’s me- CONTROVERSIAL. And you have to OWN yourself. That’s the real shadow work I stay preaching about.

I want the world to know that Madame Fairy is their cool but blunt mother, auntie, sister, friend that’s probably been exactly where they have, learned from it, healed from it and flourished by consistently prioritizing her healing and learning and wants the same for them. I want the world to know that destroying the box built to bury you in is the best thing you can do for yourself. That you can make something from nothing because you are GOD.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The gag is… I was born and raised in College Park so let’s start in the hood. I would take my best friend to The Bando on MLK for some BBQ Crack Wings AND DEEP FRIED OREOS so she can see the black culture museum inside there and eat bad but good if you know the vibes. I stay in McDonough, so I would probably take her to the Slutty Vegan in Jonesboro so we can get my favorite alcoholic drinks and some bomb vegan burgers, of course. I need jalapenos. I would hope to take her to a Yamm’s Burlesque Show at The Love Below Speakeasy where I started my Burlesque journey under the watch of Madam Mercury. Then I have a kid, so I would want to take him somewhere fun with us like Urban Air. I am still learning Atlanta as an adult but I will say I am loving the “market” type of places like “The Works.” Hopefully my colleague Edwin Hung would be putting on one of his Erotic Art Events he holds all over the city so she could also see me perform before she goes back home. There we could see some art and buy things we don’t need from vendors.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The “Healed Girl Summer” collective is a collaborative effort on my part as well as my colleagues in the community. This group of women I have been working with has inspired me to push forward with my ideas in the healing space. They have shown me that no effort is in vain and that we can come, put our minds together and make things happen. We had our first annual Healed Girl Summer event this past July and we are looking forward to collaborating even more to put on small events year round leading to a huge event every summer. The event focused on movement as a form of connecting with our Divine Feminine Energy and healing trauma in a safe space. You can follow Healed Girl Summer on Instagram @healed.grl.summer or contact us via email hgs.spprt.team@gmail.com.
