We had the good fortune of connecting with Slayla The Purpose and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Slayla, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“How you gone win, When you ain’t right within?” Is one of my favorite quotes and a mantra that I live by. Lauryn Hill was so ahead of her time. I love it because it speaks to truly dedicating yourself to doing inner- work, so that you can have the things you want in life. By inner-work I mean self-love, discipline, healing, eating healthier, meditating, etc. These are things I do personally, I believe it’s why Im having such success in every aspect of my life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an artist through and through. I’m very intentional about my art, from the titles of songs, to the notes, to the lyrics, to the visuals. I care deeply about telling a story. I have a passion for writing and just creating worlds and experiences through music. I want people to feel connected to something bigger than you and I. I’m proud of the work I’ve been doing and of course the success of my debut EP “Twelve Twentytwo”. It’s truly a labor of love and I’m very blessed to have been able to share so much of myself with the world. The response has been overwhelmingly rewarding. To get this far has not been easy, and I still have such a long way to go. I understand that this is not a race, life is a journey and with everything we must be patient and have gratitude always. I’m still learning about myself especially as it relates to being an artist. I’m learning what sounds makes me feel the most joy, what stories I want to share and why, I’m learning to be comfortable with being myself. It’s very vulnerable, but it’s also pushed me to have confidence like never before. When it comes to my brand and my story, I want people to feel the authenticity of my music and feel empowered and confident in themselves.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok so boom, I’m from the south side of Atlanta. I’m not really into the glitz and glam of Atlanta, though that’s cute, I like the ma and pop type restaurants. So when you come to the city, I’d take you to Yasin’s off of Old Nat. They have the best fried seafood and hush puppies hands down. And I love Big Daddy’s on Old Nat too, if you’re hungry for some soul food. I went to school in East point, so I’d definitely have to take you to the best chicken sandwhich spot in the city, Chic -a- loes. They have these supersize chicken sandwhiches that you can have dipped in any sauce. It’s so so so good! My favorite spot right now is Slutty Vegan, I go to the one in Jonesboro cause it’s closest to me and they literally know me because I come in so much, I’m low key embarrassed, but it is what it is. My favorite luxury nightlife spot is Pasha. Very upscale, good hookah, good food. I also like Hendrixx in Edgewood same food, but the area can get a lil rowdy. The High Museum is always a good spot for the artsy hippie type, Fridays are lit! That’s all I got for now, you’re bound to have a good time with me regardless.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out my manager, MarNique Turner. We’ve been sisters for a long time, but when she decided to help me with my career as a music artist, it brought us closer than ever. We think the same, we’re both creatives, we even have the same birthday. She has been so supportive and encouraging with every crazy idea i throw her way. She trusts my ideas, because she knows me and knows how committed I am to my art. I’m deeply grateful for her and I owe a lot to her.
