We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylar Resna Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skylar Resna, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I had to ask myself, “What can I see myself doing for the rest of my life? What am I passionate about?” The only thing that was clear was my love for theatre and storytelling. It’s not only my heart but where my passion is. I was always told that your gifts will make room for you. My gift is theatre and storytelling. So far in my life, those gifts have provided me with opportunities I never thought possible and I’m blessed.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Nothing about my journey was easy. Honestly, I made it hard for myself because I didn’t believe in me for a long time. But I had an amazing community behind me and with a supportive community like the one I have, anything is possible. I can truly say that God is guiding my steps. Opportunities seem to come out of nowhere and I’m thankful for them. When they come, I do my best because that is what every project deserves, no matter my role. Giving your all is the best branding out there. Your reputation will beat you to the room. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that it doesn’t matter how great those around you think you are; you have to believe in yourself. Each of us has been given a mission and purpose and we have to fulfill it, not just for ourselves but for the world around us.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would go to Moe’s Barbeque on 14th street and pick up some food to go. Then, we’d have a picnic in Piedmont Park, one of my new favorite things to do. It’s a great way to enjoy being outside and hanging out with friends. After that, we would go over to Botanical Gardens and enjoy the beauty of nature. If we were staying in Lawrenceville, we’d start the day. by shopping at The Shoppes on Webb Ginn. Then we’d stop for lunch at Wayback Burgers because they are the absolute BEST! After that, we would catch a show at the Aurora Theatre, who never disappoints on a show. After that we’d eat dinner on the rooftop of McCray’s Tavern, ending the night with some ice cream at Sweet Joy Ice Cream bar.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
“What is a teacher? Someone who inspires the student to give of her best in order to discover what she already knows.” – Paulo Coelho. I have blessed with the best teachers and I love some more than others. But there is one that stands out from the crowd and inspires me to this day. Dr. Angela Farr Schiller. Before she came along, I thought I knew what and who I was going to be, an actress, and just an actress. But she pushed me to think harder than I ever thought before. She encouraged me to do a research project that helped me discover my personal mission as an artist. She made me face hard questions and realities that I didn’t want to that in the end, made me into who I am today. I don’t even think she knows how grateful I am that she came to Kennesaw State but I hope she does now.
