We had the good fortune of connecting with Skyi Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skyi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always wanted to be my own boss since grade school. When I entered college my mother insisted of focusing on school and school only. I knew I could not allow myself to go to her for my financial needs and wants, specially after she’s been work her butt off to make sure I have a comfortable lifestyle. So, I decided to start a business. At the time I started my locs and saw how many people at my school had them as well. Since I already had a salon in the house due to my mom, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity. Immediately skyi locdin was born.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a young entrepreneur in today’s society, it’s not easy. Establishing and marketing yourself is way different than it used to be. It’s a lot more personalized. One of the biggest challenges I’m currently learning is charging my worth. My whole goal is to provide a luxury and personalized experience for everyone. I feel everyone should have that luxury of getting pampered, getting their hair done, making sure that they feel good about themselves. I’ve had multiple people get by with out paying much when the work put in will cost them hundreds. It was definitely a lesson learned but I wasn’t mad about it. I’m just glad I was able to make them smile and dance in the mirror! I believe another challenge I face is marketing. Now a days people share everything. They do vlogs, show what restaurants they ate at, share what they think, share what and who did them wrong and people tune in. That has crossed over into marketing. People want to see the hardships, the wins and the losses. I’m not very social in that aspect but it’s a key part in marketing. In the same breath Im also realizing i don’t have to share everything but build more so a certain media lifestyle that interests people. Such as the life of a young entrepreneur and how the benefits impacted me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m A very spontaneous type. I don’t like to plan outings. If my friends was to visit however, I would definitely make sure we try restaurants that we both have not tried. I would also take us to different museums and art galleries that the city has to offer. Maybe take day to explore different and unique thrift shops and boutiques Then we can end a night with getting dressed up and heading to a beautiful jazz club for dinner. For some more action we can definitely go to an escape room, arcade, roller rink. I’m not opposed to anything really. That would be an amazing week trip full of fun and excitement and I think my bestie would agree.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I credit my success to my mother, friends and clients. Truly, with out the support from my friends posting and reposting my work, my mother coaching me through the process making sure I’m established financially and professionally, as well, my clients who visited and trusted me to their hair my business would not be standing. I had so many doubts about my journey. So many worries. These people reassured me every step of the way.
