We had the good fortune of connecting with Sita Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sita, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business was something I always wanted to do, I knew at some point I’ll take the plunge, not sure when. Working in Banking for over 10 years became something I didn’t enjoy anymore, the job that I was once dedicated to and succeeded in, No longer fulfilled me.
I remember coming home from work talking to my husband about how miserable I felt and how much I wanted to do something that made me feel good about myself. I finally decided to look into real estate and purchased my first investment property, that I completely gutted and renovated. I enjoyed every bit of it and learned so much. One led to 2 then by the 3rd property I realized that this is actually working, and I love it. My husband is the one who made me believe I could do this and encouraged me to follow my heart. I resigned from banking, went all in on my Real Estate Investments. During the renovation process I came across a recurring problem when it came to kitchen and bathroom designs. Cabinets were very expensive, the entire design process was expensive, and the quality was never something I was pleased with. I went on a mission to find quality cabinets and hardware that didn’t have to take up most of your renovation budget with access to designers. That’s where My 2020 Cabinets Business came along. I love the designing process, my clients and knowing that my product and services/skills are exceptional.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
2020 Cabinets turned out to be a byproduct of my Real estate Investment business. I realized how much I enjoyed the creative aspect of it all. I wanted to learn and grow with the experience I gained through the years. Designing Kitchens and Bathrooms and being able to supply personalized designs and high quality finishes to every client is something I enjoy completely.

Being from Trinidad, with a huge family and moderate income I learnt very early on about financial ebb and flow. When I decided to move to the US at 21 years old I knew I had no safety net and I would have to work twice as hard as everyone else to be able to succeed.
Risk reward Analysis is a huge part of any business, I like to think that every risk I took was balanced off by equal reward. I knew starting my business was a huge risk which I tried to off set by starting small and growing in a pace I could handle.
The one thing I value most is honesty, as your word is your bond. Especially when working with clients that’s putting a lot of trust in me, my work and my products/services.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I remember as a young girl my mom telling my sisters and I never to depend on anyone, always to be independent, strong and honest. I carry that with me to this day. My husband who without a doubt has been my inspiration my rock.

I read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho a few years ago and to me this literary gem has been more than just a book, it’s been my motivation. It’s made me more aware of the signs that lead us to our destiny by listening to your heart. One take away…. Follow your dreams!!
