We had the good fortune of connecting with Simone Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Simone, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is the scariest thing to me, but not taking risks is even scarier. You only fail if you do not try and just as easy as it is to imagine my life with everything I want… it’s just as easy to imagine living a life of mediocrity.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I remember being a creative since a young girl. I enjoyed drawing, building out design in Microsoft, making ankle bracelets, and writing stories here and there. Although I didn’t apply myself with my true artistic abilities I was later able to connect with my inner artist in 2017 when I locked myself in my apartment for 30 days and taught myself graphic design. Since then I’ve be a self-taught graphic designer that specializes in logo design and branding design for growing and seasoned businesses.
Creating experiences, building, and maintaining strong relationships with my clientele sets me apart being that I am committed to the success of my clients before my own. That may sound crazy but if you think about it, as long as your clients are succeeding then they will always need you which will in turn leverage your success.
One of the many things I am proud of is myself. I believed enough in myself and my skill to become a better artist and business woman through wanting more for myself, remaining a student of my craft, and always willing to learn what I don’t know. It makes me excited for my future in business and my contribution to the culture.
I got here today by remaining resilient and for never giving up on myself when things got shaky and uncertain. This has probably been the most difficult thing I’ve done in my life thus far because walking out on faith is never easy but very much rewarding in the end game; but I overcame the obstacles by understanding my strengths and my ability to do what I set my mind to. Prayer also keeps me sane.
Through it all I’ve learned that circumstances is temporary and its not what happens to you but how you respond to what has happened to you. At the end of my career I want people to know that I worked hard for this and that I deserved everything that I’ve been blessed with. They will know how passionate and how talented I am as a brand designer and overall creative. I have a story to tell and in due time you will hear it. I’m just another black woman that didn’t let her sad story determine her destiny but instead fuel it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m all for self-care! Anything that will contribute to that is where I will be. Life beats us up so bad sometimes that we forget to ENJOY OURSELVES. It’s the little things for me, therefore a personalized week filled with all the things my bestie enjoys like shopping and introducing new things that we can do together is always fun.
I will take her to local creative pop ups, museums, dinner dates where we can dress up just because, followed by a hole in a wall spot where we can drunkingly sing and dance to our favorite songs.
Randomly meeting new people who you have some things in common with you, learning something you didn’t know yesterday, and raw and intimate conversations is always a good time to me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shout out to all of the brown women who are on their journey of figuring herself out. The women who dug deep within to love themselves a little more, trusted themselves and God to see it through, and who always remember to put themselves first by protecting their peace.
