Meet Simon Salt: Fashion Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Simon Salt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Simon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was transitioning from running my own digital marketing agency and traveling a lot as a speaker/author. I was burned out but I wanted to continue being creative. Photography had always been my number one hobby. I decided to turn it into a business. The focus on Fashion came later as I realized that I didn’t want to just “do photography” but to combine it with my love of clothes and style.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think setting yourself apart in the world of photography comes from putting as much of yourself into the process. No two photographers will take the same image because they each bring their own life experiences to that scene and imbibe it with part of themselves. That’s what art is, at least to me. Fashion photography is the process of capturing the intersection between a group of artists. The designer, the stylist, the hair and makeup artist and the model all meeting in the same moment of creative direction. As the photographer you have to find your place in that moment. Decide what it is you bring. I’d like to think that is what my work shows. My work, and therefore my brand, is a balance of giving the client what they want and injecting enough of myself into the process that the final images are unique. I would say the most impactful thing I have learned about photography is that great images are created by spending a lot more time without a camera in your hand than people think.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I divide my time between three cities (well when we aren’t in lockdown). San Antonio, Texas. Atlanta, GA and New York, NY. So if a friend were to come with me for a trip I’d show them the hill country outside of San Antonio and some of the small cities that surround it. In New York I’d take them to the quietest part of Manhattan I know – the middle of Central Park and ask them if the still think they are in New York. In Atlanta I would take them to Arabia Mountain the wilderness there is fantastic. Of course I’d also have to take them to the Goat Farm and the Beltline.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been and continue to be a lot of people who have had a big influence in my professional life. But in terms of photography I would absolutely have to give credit to the work of Marc Turnley and the Atlanta Photographers Guild. Marc set the group up over a decade ago and I was honored to volunteer as a mentor for a little over a year. I learned so much from being a studio partner, from working alongside other great photographers and getting to share the things I have learned. No matter where I live the Atlanta area and in particular the Atlanta Photographers Guild will always be my creative home.
