Meet Simon Giuseppe Floris | Focus Puller & Editor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Simon Giuseppe Floris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Simon Giuseppe, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I owe a lot of my success to the people who surround me. My family encouraged me to stay curious and learn every day, which led me to being able to think on my feet more quickly. My friends sparked my love for the arts, and specifically movies, and with that love and desire to know more about it I’ve been able to be more successful in how I make films.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a focus puller and editor. A focus puller is a role on a film set that involves adjusting the focus of a shot so that the subject in front of the camera is always sharp and not blurry. It can be a very daunting task, because if the subject isn’t sharp, the shot is oftentimes unusable. Typically, if you’re a good focus puller, you’ll be asked by the producers of a show or film you’ve worked on to come back for a different project, because it means they trust you. I’ve been asked to come back many times, so I think that makes me a really good focus puller and sets me apart from many mediocre ones. Editing is what’s been taking up more and more of my time recently, especially with the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA writers and actors strikes. I take pride in my work as an editor, because I think that my speed, my consistency, and my creativity aren’t matched by many in my field. This year I worked on a series for a large company (I can’t say which until it’s out) and I edited 13 episodes in a really short span of time.
It wasn’t easy to achieve this, because I’m not a US citizen so getting my visa was a massive hurdle before I could become as successful and well-connected as I am now.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Flatiron Bar is a great place to make connections in the film industry. J R Crickets is a great place for food if you love chicken wings.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout Josh Parsons, the creator and producer of Braintickle Studio, for trusting me with creative decisions for many of his projects. He’s a really great editor and 3D artist as well.
