We had the good fortune of connecting with Sicarra Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sicarra, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
Doing the work to ensure that I didn’t pass down my limited beliefs, unhealthy behaviors. Being intentional in building an open, honest relationship

The most important thing I’ve done in terms of impacting my child is being intentional about encouraging, empowering and building my daughter up. I make it a point to compliment more than I criticize. As a parent, you want to do everything in your power to guide and mold your children to be the best version of themselves, however in doing so, it’s very easy to point out everything they do wrong in an attempt to correct behavior. From a child’s perspective it can easily come off as “I can’t do anything right” when there is no balance with highlighting the things they do correctly. It’s also something that I see her modeling when dealing with other people and it’s always a proud moment to witness the impact in real time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Over the years I’ve wrestled back and forth between being a fashion designer and fashion stylist. Although I’ve always loved styling more than designing, I have a great appreciation for the art of both. It wasn’t until most recently it dawned on me that if I became more strategic in my thinking/ planning, I could cultivate both of my crafts to be successfully merged as one. I think that aspect gives a uniqueness to my brand.

Experiencing the highs and lows within the fashion industry as well as life in general have brought me where I am today. Was it easy? Absolutely not. It’s still not easy…lol! The industry is constantly evolving, so I’m always challenging myself to think bigger and always being open to the possibilities of having to pivot at any given time. I’ve never been afraid to bet on myself even when it didn’t make sense to other people, I’ve be ever allowed other’s opinions to keep me from pursuing anything. Even the things that didn’t necessarily work out at the time, I never have to worry about what if, because I know that I gave it a shot.

I’ve learned countless lessons along the way but two of the biggest and most recent are, not to fight what you know in your heart you were created to do. Also as a creative, owning your significance in your field and not feeling pressured to discount your craft just because others don’t yet see or appreciate the value of your time and talent is a power move.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly being a Detroit native, born and raised, I think it goes without saying that the our itinerary would consist of hitting up all of the D’s local gems! Strolling through downtown Detroit or even the Avenue of Fashion, we’d cover the board in terms of having options to do all of those things and more. Honestly there are so many great restaurants, places to shop, grab beautiful premium cocktails, hang out and just enjoy the scenery we’d need much more than a weekend to even scratch the surface, but we’d be off to a great start.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my daughter. My greatest inspiration to keep going especially on the days when I don’t feel motivated. She’s impacted my life in such an amazing way without even trying. I wouldn’t be the mother, wife or woman I am today without knowing that she’s always watching and looking up to me to show her the way. Mikki is the most beautiful little person inside and out and deserves to be given her flowers now.
