We had the good fortune of connecting with Shuwan Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shuwan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

In collaboration with the talented Annie Ziyao Chen, I had the privilege of co-founding ©:iidrr – a platform that serves as an immersive art community, full of endless possibilities. In this artistic sphere, we provide a nurturing space for emerging creators in the fields of new media art and new photography, where friendships are forged and inspiration is fostered. Our efforts include a variety of different initiatives, including an engaging artist talk series, collaborating with emerging artists on commercial projects, and establishing an artist-run gallery space and creative agency.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artworks revolves around the convergence of physical and digital domains, delving into the transformative potential of glitches and the delicate equilibrium between vulnerability and stability. By integrating glitched imagery, modeling software, and machine learning, I produce innovative photographs and sculptures that challenge the conventions of traditional photography and alternative processes. My objective is to unlock fresh pathways for generating abstract forms and present a “lens” on the future.

My professional journey has been shaped by various challenges, particularly in reconciling my sociological background with the intricate coding intricacies of artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, I have persevered through self-directed learning and emerged with a deep curiosity for the boundless possibilities of glitches. I am driven to explore the evolving relationship between technology and society and engage in thought-provoking dialogues about these emergent frontiers.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

During my friend’s visit, we would explore the vibrant fusion of technology, art, and independent culture. We’d visit renowned museums like the Museum of Modern Art and the New Museum, and interactive galleries like the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center for cutting-edge digital experiences. We’d also enjoy independent bookstores like McNally Jackson and Strand Bookstore, and catch films at indie theaters like Metrograph and Anthology Film Archives.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the vibrant artistic community that has played an invaluable role in shaping my journey. The unwavering support, mentorship, and collaborative spirit of fellow artists, curators, and art enthusiasts have propelled me forward. I am grateful for the love and encouragement from my family and friends who have been constant pillars of support. Ultimately, it is the power of art itself, along with the visionary artists who have paved the way and continue to inspire, that deserve credit and recognition in my story.
