We had the good fortune of connecting with Shonovia Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shonovia, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
How hard it is. I make things look easy, but in all actuality this entire process is hard. Especially when you’re literally doing everything by myself. It’s really a mind game that only the strong can survive.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At this point I consider myself a content creator. I love making and posting content from dancing/choreography to making e-flyers, and taking my own photos. The reason I’m in the position that I’m in is because I get bored with doing one thing. I started off as just a dancer and now I’ve taught choreography to others, started my own cosmetics business, partnered with Walmart, and more! None of this was easy. Trust me there’s been days and nights I would literally have to pull myself out of bed or cry my eyes out until I had no tears left. I’ve overcome more challenges this year than I’ve ever done before. I’ve learned A LOT of lessons along the way. The main one is that I had to teach myself how to be there for myself because no one really cares about what you’re dealing with or what you’re going through, so by by showing up everyday for myself turned me into a hard worker with a strong mind and determined to going. At the end of the day, the work has to get done and the money has to be made. So, the only thing I want the world to know is that no matter what I or what you go through just keep going. Do it tired. do it alone. Do it with tears in your eyes. Just do it. I have a vision for myself and my brand that only I can see and I’m not going to stop until everyone knows who I am and my products are sitting on shelves all around the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I just moved from New York to Georgia so I’m not really familiar with Georgia yet, but I know the things that he likes to do and the places he likes to go so I would find spots that fits into his typical activity routine. Spots like cigar lounges or hookah joints. He loves good music so places that have live music/bands.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My best friend Sam. He’s been there way before I even started my business. The best, supportive friend I’ve ever had in my life honestly. He supports me and I support him. When we met we were both kind of in the same predicament, but since then we’ve accomplished a lot! He supports anything I choose to do. When I accomplish things, he shows real genuine love. And he’ll definitely tell me if something isn’t right for me. He’s from D.C. and we all know a northerner is going to keep it all the way real with you no matter how it’ll make me feel. But, I really and truly appreciate him. Words to him: I love you to death and I’m proud of everything you’ve done for yourself and I thank you for always being there, supporting me and dealing with my bratty ways.
