Meet Shonkeya Shaw | Eyebrow and Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shonkeya Shaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shonkeya, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My Spirit. As an introvert I’m a tad shy at times but my spirit connects with people and gives off a vibe that people want around them and their love ones. I just be myself in my own little world and if something doesn’t feel right in spirit, I’m shutting it down. Now let’s be clear this is not about religion. I love god and thank him for everything! What I mean when I say my spirit are those connections I make through positivity, happiness, honestly, support, and love. My spirit is a factor behind my success because I have always been myself even through the struggles. It is measured by the smiles I put on my client’s faces, having fun with my family and friends, helping others, and the ability to make others successful. I’m always giving the best advice I can give whether it’s about eyebrows, makeup, business, or personal. It all comes from trust and nurture of my own capabilities, and recognizing that these capabilities actually give some value to other people. At times I see that my business/brand has a spirit of it’s own and I never anticipate it but that spirit has gone in many different directions that I’m thankful for.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m the owner, brow and makeup artist of Keya Did It Beauty N Browz. I specialize in eyebrows and I also enhance your natural beauty by providing several makeup services for your special occasion. I have done makeup for weddings, photoshoots, birthdays, proms, graduations, baby showers, a girls glam night, and date nights. I have my own cosmetic line for eyebrows, lip glosses, lipsticks, lip liners, lashes, glitters, makeup remover, and accessories. I’m located in South Atlanta the Stockbridge area. What sets me apart from other brow and MUAs is that I have a Soft Glam, Glitz and Glam, So Icey Glam and iGlam service for clients to choose based on their event. My iGlam service are for clients that don’t wear foundation but still want a mini cute look. This service is also perfect for teenage girls. You can also book me for a girls glam night. Included in all my makeup services I clean/shape the eyebrows. I also travel for those who want makeup done in the comfort of their home or event location. Other things that sets me apart is my creativity, professionalism, spirit, and customer service. I’m most proud of myself and everything I have accomplish. Believing that I can do it and not giving up. God know it has been a struggle from the beginning to now. How did I get to where I am today business-wise is my hard work and determination. Constantly posting my work on social media, passing out business cards, networking, and client referrals. Spending the money I made to get products and equipment for my business. I know there are some websites that send you clients but my platform is very different to the point where I have to promote myself and go get clients. Was it easy? NO! How did I overcome the challenges? I take time to PLAN. I plan out my day and how to get my list of things done for myself and my business. Whatever comes to my mind I write it down, get creative, and work hard to achieve it. The lessons I’ve learned along the way is that there will be some ups and downs, people will cancel on you, and all money isn’t good money. On the other hand god will send the right people to you. I want the world to know that I’m a mom, wife, and work full time. I’m a self taught brow and makeup artist as I practice on myself, family, and friends. Although I’ve been doing makeup for a while. I started my business in 2019. I had everything planned out and the things I wanted to do for business in 2020 until COVID-19 came and set me back in a major way. I did every I could to survive business wise. Which is why I feel like this year 2021 is only the beginning, the warm up. So that means for 2022 is the come up. I’m constantly learning new things with the intentions on adding more to my brand. I’m adding another cosmetic product to my line and discontinuing other products. I will be adding more beauty & business services to my brand next year.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love to eat and have a good time. Here in Atlanta there are so many fun places to hang out and eat. I would take them to Steak Market and Morton’s Steakhouse they have delicious steaks. VVS Lounge, Seven Lounge, Savoy, Ubar, Escobar, Juicy Crab, Little Five Points or Atlantic Station to eat, lounge, and entertainment. I love sports and skating so I would take them skating and to a Falcons or Hawks game. There are more places but just to name a few places where I would take them for a good time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to Shoutout those who have supported me from day one and those who continue to support me. It is not easy and without their continuing support, referrals, sharing my social media, website, passing out cards, and booking with me I would not be where I am today. Thank you all so much!
