We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheryl Knight and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheryl, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
All my life I have had a passion for art. I come from a family of musicians, crafters and artists. My father fostered and early love and appreciation for art in me as far back as I can remember. My dad is an amazing self-taught fine artist and musician who always made sure we had paper in the house, music to listen to and ideas to share.
I attained a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Fashion Design and Merchandising. I had plans to pursue a career in the Fashion Industry but life, as it usually does, had other plans for me.
I got married, settled down and had two amazing kids. I choose to be a stay at home mom and dedicate myself to my family but, little did I know the inspiration for my business would blossom from my newly chosen lifestyle. Throughout all the years, my love for art never wavered. I would do little art projects with my oldest (who at the time was my only child) and come up with different and fun ways to explore art mediums.
When I had my second child the idea of a kids art studio was beginning to take shape in my mind but, at the time our family was in the process of moving from Orlando, FL to Douglasville, GA so I put my idea on the back burner so I could focus on adjusting us in our new home and environment.
After a year the idea came back and I felt that it was the right time to start developing it! Starrskye Art Studios was brought forth in May 2018. There were many hurdles and obstacles to get over but, I was determined not to silence or push my dream back again. With my family’s support and encouragement I was able to figure out navigate the initial start of my business. I had my first class in December of 2018
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It has definitely NOT been easy. Anything that is worth it never is. I was a Stay At Home Mom (still am) with an idea, a dream, to be able to share my love of art and my experiences as a creative mom with others. My educational background was in Fashion not business, so everything I have learned I picked up by doing my research, trial and error, and networking with others. I am the only one on my team currently so, it falls to me to do EVERYTHING. I am my own accountant, web designer, graphic designer, promoter and so many more. As a woman and an entrepreneur, I have a drive to prove myself and do it better than anyone else and that can put so much pressure on you as a person. I am so very thankful to have a SOLID support system behind me driving me to do my very best always.
Starrskye Art Studios is a full-service MOBILE art studio specializing in toddler and kids arts and crafts with a wide range of class offerings and party packages! The goal of Starrskye Art Studios is to make art available and relatable to all. Art is a fundamental learning tool that is underutilized in society. Starrskye Art Studio seeks to change that by offering and teaching all forms of art with a target on creativity and the process. Starrskye Art Studios understands that everyone has a different view of art and we embrace all and encourage each person’s individual style while laying down the fundamentals of fine arts. I am so proud of the fact that Starrskye Art Studios has been so well received in the community! It proves to me that there is a need for it and I love that I am able to share my love of art with all the wonderful families!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love two things, other than my family of course, ART and FOOD. Luckily metro Atlanta is vibrant and bustling with both. I love checking out Midtown Atlanta’s murals and belt line art and Ponce City Market has a great food hall as well. Peters Street Station is also a great art scene with fantastic eateries nearby. The Works is one of my favorite food halls to take visiting friends and family to eat and hang out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so very blessed to have a strong support system in my family. My husband is my personal business advisor and assistant. He is at every event helping me with my setup and doing all he can to make sure I have everything I need. My brother and my sister-in-law and my niece and nephew are also at every class, participating and helping as well. Even though half my family is in another state (Florida) they help when they can and ALWAYS show encouragement and offer motivation no matter what. My sister is also a HUGE supporter and my sounding board, she is someone I can count on to be honest with me. My cousin is my art sister, we bounce ideas off of each other and she is my go to for things when I am feeling out of control, she helps me center myself. Of course there is also my amazing client base, who have become friends and consistently support and encourage their little artists to create with me. I love my support system and I am so very happy that they are around for me!!
