Meet Sherrie Simmons | BUYER + STYLIST for Television & Film

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherrie Simmons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sherrie, how do you think about risk?

Taking a risk on myself was literally the catalyst for my career as a Buyer + Stylist.

Prior to, I worked in Corporate America whereafter 11 years, I decided to risk the security of a stable, high paying job with great benefits, in order to chase my dreams of becoming a Buyer+Fashion Stylist for television and film.

While there were, obviously, some fears associated with taking a risk like this, I chose to lean more into my faith and BET ON ME! I’m so glad I did!

With great risk comes great reward! Since taking a risk on myself, I’ve found happiness and success in my career as a full time stylist and wardrobe buyer. I’ve worked on over 25 television and film productions, including Tyler Perry’s SISTAS…and the upcoming movie, CREED III, staring Michael B Jordan. Most recently, my work with client/actor Devale Ellis, of Sistas on BET, has been featured in InStyle Weekly magazine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

My career as a BUYER + STYLIST for TV and Film is super exciting!

One day I could be shopping in a high end mall or department store; & the next, I could be pulling pieces from Target or Walmart! Then, next, I could be on set styling an editorial photoshoot for your favorite actor, podcast host, &/or brand!

Each day as a Buyer + Stylist is so different, making it a dream job for a creative like me. I consider what I do as ART; Therefore, getting to create something new everyday through fashion is so gratifying.

There are very few opportunities to get bored as a Buyer + Stylist, which is why after 8 years, I can still say that I absolutely love what I do…regardless of the heavy lifting, required research, long hours, &/or travel.

Being a Buyer + Stylist for TV and Film is a career in fashion that I truly want to shine a light on, as it can sometimes be unrecognized. I want to create opportunities and let other fashionistas know that BUYING is an exciting and fulfilling career with great opportunities and money to be made.

When carving your path to a career in fashion, be sure to explore all the options. Don’t just lock in on celebrity styling because being a buyer can be just as amazing!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

As a stylist, one of my favorite things to do is to people watch. So if I had a friend come into town for a week, I would definitely take them to a cool brunch spot like Breakfast at Barney’s or Toast on Lenox where we could observe the crowds personal style.

Next, I would take them to the High Museum for some art and culture, followed by dinner at Le Colonial…a new favorite of mine.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to every mentor, family member, friend, designer and client who believed in my talent and abilities as a buyer and stylist. Thank you for trusting me with your creative visions and allowing me to help bring them to LIFE!!
