We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherrell Duncan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sherrell, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I create a safe space for my kids. I let them have and feel whatever emotion they have. I teach them to be respectful in their reactions but to always feel. Letting them know they should never lose their voice or dim the light for anyone isn’t an option! SHINE ALWAYS I even in the eye of turmoil, God is always there to protect you and so is Mommy!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Sherrell Duncan, a beacon of authenticity and empowerment, vividly recalls the sage advice she received at nine years old: “Tell your story fearlessly, so it can never be taken from you.” That pivotal conversation continues to shape her journey. Sherrell emerged from the depths of adversity in 2013, facing post-partum depression and an unhealthy relationship. Coping with pain and depression led to overindulgence in food and alcohol. A pivotal moment brought about change – a friend intervened, replacing alcohol with nourishing smoothies and encouraging a workout routine. Shedding over 50 pounds, she coined the hashtag #TheGoodThick, marking the start of her fitness journey.
Even before official certification, the supportive response she received from women ignited her purpose: guiding others through similar struggles. Thus, “The Good Thick” was born, a successful and genuine fitness brand founded on transparency.
Notably, Sherrell’s life took another extraordinary turn. She crossed paths with Alfred Duncan, who she had yet to learn would become her future husband. Their surprise wedding, orchestrated spontaneously by her husband and documented under #ForeverDuncan, quickly gained viral attention. However, as their fame grew, they recognized the importance of placing their relationship ahead of the spotlight’s glare.
Opting to tell their own story, the couple launched the “Friends Who Smash Podcast,” addressing relationships candidly. Sherrell’s “Dear Self Brunch” series, initiated after a personal tragedy, brings together women seeking healing and answers. With each platform, Sherrell breaks barriers and encourages vulnerability.
In a recent development, Sherrell has launched her very own podcast “I Don’t Know Who This Is For” where she sits down with guest and hear their stories of overcoming trauma and healing. Motivated by regaining her post-baby weight, she embarked on a fresh fitness journey. This time, she introduced the #WalkAndTalkWithSherrell initiative where women meet every Saturday to walk 3-5 miles.
Sherrell Duncan embraces her vulnerability through her platforms, inspiring countless others to do the same. Her journey is a testament to her commitment to healing and empowerment, helping people embark on their transformative paths.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My Bestfriend is visiting, ok there’s two places I love to go in the DMV and that’s the Annapolis Harbor and Old Town Alexandria!!

I would definitely book us a stay at one of the best hotels in Annapolis! We would eat breakfast at First Watch in Alexandria. Get some delicious ice cream from the harbor in Annapolis.

Since I am on a sobriety journey, there will be no bar hopping just good ole restaurants, some hot yoga downtown DC, checking out really good desserts and people watching in Old Town!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow! There’s so many people that have made a great impact on my life and it’s hard to choose.

But I first thank God! I have ran from all the things God has had got me to be a serial people pleaser. I would see a certain level of success and then it would fade away because I wasn’t operating in my full purpose God intended me to. I had to take a one pause and realize WHO I WAS and WHOSE I WAS! It was only then I started to really taste the joys of happiness, freedom and safety!

Next is my Husband, Alfred “Black Boo” Duncan! His presence in my life has taken me to another level. His undying love, support and respect is UNMATCHED and I’m so grateful God loaned him to me.

My Girls, Gabi and Royal my biggest accountability partners and loyal supporters! Mommy loves you both so much for choosing me and making sure I’m always doing the right thing.
