We had the good fortune of connecting with Shena Renee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shena, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My end goal is and has always been Broadway. I’ve been acting since I was ten years of age. One of my favorite roles to play is Effie White, of which I’ve played 11 times. I’ve also been in the Color Purple, Once on this Island, The perfect Pastor and more. By the end of my career, I would love to have inspired young women of color to know that no Dream is too big!!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Ironically, I had a first song before I had first words, (Hot Thang by Prince.) My mom tried getting me to say momma but I was shy. I’d wait until they left the room and start singing. But she eventually caught me. She actually has a video on VHS. When I got older, I started performing in different lounges and night clubs around the Atlanta area. I later went on to open for artists like Jill Scott, Fantasia, Mint Condition, to name a few. I eventually landed my first tour singing background for K. Michelle. I later started professionally in Musical Theatre. That was one of the best decisions I could’ve made. Was it hard? ABSOLUTELY! I was trying to find a balance between working a 9-5 at the bank and having a career all while in college. But I made it through. I’ve learned a lot on this journey. Patience is key and prayer is EVERYTHING.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting, I’d take them to some of my favorite places here in Atlanta. City Winery, BQE, and The Linnethia Lounge to name a few. Now I’m a seafood girl, so we’d definitely go for Fresh Dungeness crab legs, oysters, and drinks at the Juicy Crab. (Don’t Judge me) We would visit the Botanical Gardens. They have so many Beautiful Gardens.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mother, Georgette Slocumb. She has always been my biggest cheerleader and pushes me to continue to chase my Dreams.
