We had the good fortune of connecting with Shellie Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shellie, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Born and raised in Taiwan, my childhood and adolescence were colored by the vibrant tapestry of my parents’ philosophy: to pursue what brings joy and fulfillment. Supported wholeheartedly by my mother, I was encouraged to follow my passions. Despite the nurturing environment, navigating the expectations of Asian education while pursuing my artistic inclinations posed its challenges. Balancing cultural expectations with personal aspirations taught me resilience and the importance of staying true to oneself. As I transitioned into adulthood, I delved wholeheartedly into the realm of art, exploring various avenues from advertising to fashion design. Each endeavor enriched my experiences, shaping my perspective and fueling my aspirations to create and innovate. My upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for following one’s passion and the courage to forge my own path, influencing my journey towards artistic fulfillment and self-discovery.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In the process of creation, I find myself drawn to infusing my artwork with colors that transcend reality, adding depth and dimension to the subjects. By incorporating hues that don’t naturally belong, I aim to evoke emotions and create a visual narrative that transcends the ordinary. Emphasizing contrasts allows me to highlight the interplay between light and shadow, drawing the viewer’s gaze to key focal points and imbuing the piece with a sense of dynamism. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of my work but also serves as a reflection of my penchant for experimentation and pushing the boundaries of conventional artistry. Ultimately, it is through this creative exploration that I strive to convey my unique perspective and evoke a sense of wonder in those who engage with my art.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Savannah is a jewel for walkers, blending rich history with lush scenery. Its streets, lined with spanish moss and historic architecture, are perfect for leisure and cultural events. The riverfront combines scenic views with unique shopping and dining experiences. Savannah, a testament to Southern charm, invites exploration and relaxation in equal measure.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to take a moment to highlight someone instrumental in shaping my journey in design and motion graphics. It’s not often you come across an individual whose insights and teachings change the way you see the world and guide you toward discovering your true passion. and design has not just been about pushing the boundaries of what’s visually appealing, but about inspiring to think bigger and beyond the conventional. For that, I am profoundly grateful. Here’s to him: a true visionary and an extraordinary mentor. Thank you for illuminating the path to new possibilities and inspiring us all to dream bigger.
