Meet Shekinah Burden | Founder of Own Your Crown

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shekinah Burden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shekinah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Before it became Own Your Crown it was just an idea in a notebook. I had it written down for years and just never really applied it. I wanted to create a space for men and women, young boys and girls to grow and learn more about who they are and what they are capable of doing. I wanted this to space where you can take everything you have now the good, the bad, the ugly and help yourself and others become the best. OYC wouldn’t be the amazing organization it is without its community so the same way the community has poured into us, I wanted to pour right back. Own Your Crown serves as a safe space but also a building space helping college students to younger children become their best selves and achieve every goal they can!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Own Your Crown is a organization that prides itself on staying true to who you are but also growing and becoming a better version of you. We are an organization who supports each other like we family. Coming out definitely faced some struggles but that’s apart of life and I believe in keeping pushing and keep climbing the mountain until you reach the peak. Having a great supportive team also goes into that factor as well. Everyone apart of OYC is hardworking and understanding, wouldn’t trade them for the world. I want the world to know that no matter how big your dream may seem you never know it’s achievable until you try. Your dream isn’t for everyone it’s meant for you for a reason!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite spots in Atlanta definitely is the hill on Clark Atlanta Campus. Definitely bring great vibes and the students in the AUC together. I would also recommend is the rooftop L.O.A great vibes and scenery to relax and take pictures.

Own Your Crown definitely doesn’t make the power moves it does without the team: Leah Lawrence, Antonio Grandison, Darien Richards, Angel Clemons, Mikayla Terry, Zhania Frazier, Zhada, Bryson Faust, Zak Stevenson, Janiyah Jhonson. Can’t forget the kings & Queens who are apart of OYC & believes and support the dream. This is the only the beginning so much more to come!
