We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheila and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sheila, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My business came to life during Covid-19, a friend of mine posted on her social media page that she was a notary and her business page. I was curious, so I texted her and asked her what were the requirements. She called and told me what to do and I started doing my research, watched a lot of videos on YouTube, took a course on Loan Signing and how to be a notary, became certified and signed up on different platforms for loan signings, like refinances and loan modifications as well as created my Google business page SD Notary Signing Services where I get notary work from my local area like wills, trusts, power of attorneys and estate plannings after I got commissioned with my state. I purchased all of the equipment I needed with my husbands help, got a free Google voice business number and went live on Google. After working for temp agencies most of my career,  I wanted to do something of my own. My sister, children and husband supported me like they’ve always done and I’m grateful.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My clients are usually from the surrounding area and I have quite a few returning clients because I request all of my clients to give me a review on my Google business page. That way, when people search for a notary near them, my business will pop up and they can reach out to me via message, email or by calling me. They give me a brief description of what they need, I tell them my availability and my fee and they make an appointment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d go to this lil Italian spot in my neighborhood called Cucina Bella, their food is hardy and good with large portions. then we’d window shop the local spots. We’d hit a few breakfast spots, one being Sweet Maple Cafe on Taylor in Chicago’s Little Village, go downtown and see whatever good live broadway show is playing, then go shop at Water Tower Place. We’d then stop by Sweet Magnolia for their banana pudding and then Goose Island shrimp house to get the best fried fish chips, shrimp and catfish. We’d find a roof top to go to, then Botanical Gardens. Do some shopping and eating by my house and I’d cook for them or we’d have a bbq if it’s warm out. Go to a stepper’s set, we step in Chicago and or House Music which I love. My people love my cooking. I guess I’m simpler since I’m getting older.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandmother, Jewel Campbell who always prayed for me. My mother, who had to put up with me while she prayed for me.
My hubs, children and sister
