We had the good fortune of connecting with Shay Sane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The inception of Black Girls on the Go and the Black Girl Travel movement is deeply personal for me, rooted in my own travel experiences and mental health journey. My realization that travel and mental well-being are intricately connected became the catalyst for creating a wellness brand dedicated to empowering Strong Black Women (SBW) to prioritize their mental health.

As a Strong Black Woman myself, I understand the unique challenges we face, particularly the misconception that our strength means we don’t have vulnerabilities. I observed how SBW often neglect their own needs while tirelessly taking care of others, leading to a significant impact on mental health. This recognition fueled my commitment to create a space that challenges stereotypes and encourages SBW to embrace self-care without guilt.

The incorporation of the “Twelve Wings of Wellness” in our approach to Black Girls on the Go reflects a comprehensive understanding of well-being. These wings, adapted from Dr. Bill Hettler’s dimensions of wellness, serve as guiding principles to support the holistic development of SBW. From self-reflection and mindful travel to financial wellness and spiritual harmony, each wing addresses a crucial aspect of our well-being.

Our commitment goes beyond just words. We actively facilitate workshops, seminars, events, conferences, and transformational travel experiences to educate and empower SBW about mental health. It’s about creating a community where SBW can share their stories, learn from one another, and discover the importance of prioritizing their mental health in the context of travel and everyday life.

Through Black Girls on the Go, I aspire to contribute to a paradigm shift, where strength is not synonymous with sacrificing one’s well-being. It’s a journey of empowerment, education, and celebration, where SBW can embrace their strength, prioritize their mental health, and embark on transformative travel experiences that nurture their holistic well-being.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My professional journey has been far from easy, marked by a series of traumas that have shaped and, in many ways, defined my life. One of the earliest challenges was the abandonment by my mother at the tender age of eight. It plunged me into a life below the poverty line until my older sister stepped in, becoming my caregiver and providing the stability I desperately needed. The struggles continued, and at the age of sixteen, I became a teenage mother, an experience that initially felt devastating.

Yet, through it all, I’ve emerged as a true visionary, fueled by an innate strength and resilience that helped me overcome numerous obstacles. Alongside my entrepreneurial pursuits, I dedicated thirty years to a full-time career with the Department of Justice. However, due to health reasons, I eventually retired from federal service.

My professional aspirations took a turn when I aimed to elevate my brand, delving into the crucial realm of mental health within BGOTG. However, the unforeseen challenges of the pandemic, coupled with a devastating breakup, led me into a deep and dark depression. Travel, which was both the core of my business and a key coping mechanism for my mental health, became unattainable.

This period marked a significant shift in my life. Despite being on a mental health journey for over 45 years, this depression was uniquely challenging. It led me to a behavioral health unit for a week, an experience I resisted but knew deep down was necessary.

The last three years have been the most trying of my life, but they also brought forth invaluable lessons. It prompted the transformation of BGOTG into a wellness brand, aligning with its original purpose. Amidst the struggle, I gained a profound clarity about my life’s purpose, a revelation from God that guided me to fully step into who I am. I proudly declare, “I am a Resilient, Globetrotting Pioneer.”

Through my story, I want the world to understand the depth of my resilience, the transformative power of embracing mental health, and the unwavering commitment to living authentically. I am not just a survivor; I am a thriver, and my journey is a testament to the strength that lies within us even in the face of life’s most formidable challenges.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
to the incredible sources that have played pivotal roles in shaping the woman I am today. First and foremost, I owe my success to my deep and unwavering connection with God. Learning to be obedient and allowing His guidance has been the cornerstone of my journey.

A special shoutout goes to Dr. Rev. Vikki Johnson, whose wisdom and mentorship have been a guiding light in my life. Her insights and support have been instrumental in my personal and spiritual growth.

I also want to dedicate this shoutout to my sisters & sisterfriends, both living and deceased. Their love, encouragement, and shared experiences have been a constant source of strength. I carry their lessons with me every day.

My father holds a special place in this acknowledgment. His love, guidance, and the values he instilled in me have been the bedrock of my character.

In the realm of literature, Joyce Meyer’s book, “Beauty for Ashes,” has been a transformative force since I first picked it up in 1992. It provided profound insights and guided me on the path of healing from various childhood traumas, shaping my perspective in profound ways.

Last but certainly not least, I want to express gratitude to my therapist, whose unwavering support has been a crucial companion on my healing journey. Their expertise and empathy have provided a safe space for me to explore and navigate the complexities of my past.

To all these remarkable individuals and influences, I extend my sincerest thanks. It is through their collective efforts, support, mentorship, love, and encouragement that I stand tall today, proud of the woman I have become.
