We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaunna “Mamacita” Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaunna “Mamacita”, what is the most important factor behind your success?
One of the most important factors behind the success of my brand has been visibility. Being visible in the community while wearing my brand is a reminder that we exist and it sparks conversations with strangers that allow me to introduce the mission of #BASIC.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a proud Clinical Laboratory Scientist of 18 years, Corporate Influencer, and Founder of BASIC Babies nonprofit organization. Throughout my career I’ve worked in laboratories at Hospitals and Physician Offices. I’ve also taught courses within laboratory programs at Spartanburg Community College. I have Federal certifications to teach and properly collect breath alcohol and drug screen specimens for the DOT. I also perform independent research for SC & FL small beaches documenting observations at beach access points.

My flexibility, direct approach to problem solving, and curiosity sets me apart from others. I love to learn and take on new challenges. Obtaining niche certifications has allowed me to connect with corporations and maintain relationships which has lead me to where I am today. Being a graduate of Converse College in Spartanburg, SC has been a benefactor with the institution and alumni.

Scientific influence and business consulting are what helps my brand #BASIC grow. BASIC is an acronym for Brothers And Sisters In Collaboration. I feel that collaborating is necessary to establish trusted networks as a business owner. Through collaborations, brand influencing and 1-1 consulting, many businesses have started or elevated after collaborating with #BASIC.

Our active mission: See More, Learn More, Serve More is a guide to collaborate with businesses to build a network of resources to connect those services with families/children of Basic Babies nonprofit organization. The youth benefits from shadowing opportunities through entrepreneurial exploration visiting local businesses, mental wellness-therapy, health education, and volunteering.

Being a business owner and leader requires discipline and planning. Having an exit plan is just as important as implementing daily strategies for success. One of the hardest yet rewarding lessons that I’ve learned is when to dissolve and dissociate from people or systems that drain you or become non lucrative.

The mission of BASIC has always been designed to be a global support brand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When me & my friends “hit the city” it’s definitely about the nightlife, shopping, and dining at small businesses. As a small business owner, I understand the need for support, especially from strangers. We enjoy lounges such as Boogalou Restaurant Lounge, Cru Lounge, and Josephine Lounge. They all provide an adult vibe with great food.
I also love the street art and murals throughout Atlanta. We enjoy stopping to take photos of art and sharing on social media.
Staying in touch with history is pertinent to progression, so visiting APEX museum, MLK National History Park, and other civil rights museums fill my educational love of African American History.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to recognize my Mother & Father for their continuous support and initial investments. My Husband & children for the support & constant schedule adjustments to allow my businesses to thrive. I’d like to thank nonprofit organizations Bruh Mentor, Bloom Upstate Inc., & Village Enhancers of the Upstate, for the collaborations with BASIC Babies nonprofit organization.
