We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharon Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sharon, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up in Barbados in the Caribbean, we have a strong connection to arts and culture. Music has always been a part of my environment. My grandfather sang in the church choir and creativity was staunchly encouraged when I was growing up. I often remember my parents and grandparents saying ” use your imagination”. I think those are three powerful words that have been lost in recent times.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My performing began at a young age in Barbados. I have always loved the stage and any opportunity to get onto one and sing or act I would take. Something which only a few people know, is that my entire life I struggled with crippling CPTSD and what I thought was anxiety and only just found out a few years ago is actually CPTSD and ADHD. With these setbacks, I am sometimes amazed at how I have been able to maintain a career in both these highly subjective and sometimes judgemental industries. Wearing a brave face on days when all you want to do is curl up in bed and hide away from the world.

It is the love and support of good friends and family, people who look out for me. God is a huge influence in my life. The biggest lessons I have learnt are to be patient and to enjoy the journey. We are always so excited for the outcomes, but we tend to forget to enjoy the journey, and that comes with the ups and downs, good and bad, and those are all learning lessons in themselves. Having cervical cancer also helped me to put a lot into perspective.

I want the world to know about my art, my music, my writing, the things that will help me to thrive and be sustainable as an artist. I want the world to know that I am gentle and kind, and don’t have much time for dishonesty, or ingenuine people. I want the world to know me as someone who walks in my truth and gives and loves with selflessness and heart. I want them to know that music, and art, and beauty, and passion are things we can not negotiate with in life, we just have to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooooo if one of my friends were coming to visit me in Australia it would DEFINITELY GO LIKE THIS

. Visit to the Hinterland waterfalls and pools of the Gold Coast
. Daily visits to the beaches on the Sunshine Coast which are almost as blue and beautiful as the ones in Barbados
. Australia Zoo, cause everyone needs to see a big ass snake, spider and crocodile at least once in their life
. The Whitsundays for a catamaran cruise and snorkel around the beautiful islands

…and lots and lots of great Aussie wine and cheeses

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes definitely. I absolutely need to shout out all my family, friends and supporters in Barbados, Canada and here in Australia. The life of an artist can be a complex one, and to have the continuous support of people who truly believe in you and want nothing more than to see you shine, is a blessing and something I don’t take for granted.

Shoutout to my family and friends in Atl including the gang from Arrested Development, The Straker Family from Barbados and all my supporters in the USA.  My agent Gael McDonald and former agent Rachel Forsythe for their tireless work in my career.
