Meet Sharell Abrams | Licensed Massage Therapist; Neuromuscular Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharell Abrams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharell, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
During my active tenure in the (AWFFL) Atlanta Women’s Flag Football League managed by Mashonda Paschal Gilmore , I played in the 8 women’s contact division and served as a center. I was responsible for getting the ball to and blocking for the quarterback. Often, we found ourselves battered and bruised after games, and we had to nurse our own injuries and facilitate our own recovery. After seven years of playing, I realized that there was an unaddressed need in the flag football community, We could really benefit by having professional warm-up and recovery assistance. It was this realization that motivated me to pursue an education in the Massage Therapy field with my concentration being in Sports Therapy, and that’s when Body Language was born.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have been Owner/Operator of my business for almost six years and I started by setting up at flag football games and tournaments all over Atlanta, gaining traction and attention from various leagues and that allowed me to take my business across the United States and as of last year Panama as well. However, I wouldn’t be in this position without the person that gave me my first opportunity to showcase my talent as an established Massage therapist in the Flag community and that is Dee Hodge from Fayetteville, North Carolina. Dee believed in my vision and provided me with my first set up as a vendor at his annual tournament. At the time all of my funds had to be spent on gas for travel, so I would be traveling without even having a definite place to stay, but I was determined to make each opportunity an experience to remember and a step towards success. Dee Hodge, Mashonda Paschal Gilmore, Tony Tyus, and Jason Smith always provided a home for Body Language to grow.
Running a business is no easy feat as any entrepreneur will tell you; However, with a client based mobile business I’ve had to face even more challenges with not only the usual early mornings, and late nights, but also challenging weather conditions, and creating a reliable team with a work ethic that is similar to my own. Although difficult I accepted those challenges and my trials and errors turned into fuel and drive for my passion because I believe that this is my calling. I feel as though what sets me apart from others is my genuine desire to help people correctly care for their bodies. A direct reflection in my consistent five star ratings, positive reviews and my ever growing client base.
Currently, my business is located at 100 White st In Atlanta’s historic West End community . Inside Dr. Remi Onifade’s Team Rehab. I offer several types of massage services including Swedish (relaxation), Lymphatic Drainage, Sports massage and Deep tissue ect. I pride myself on assisting with injuries, enhancing overall muscle function and health, and providing expert level care to my clients. It brings me an immense sense of pride when clients trust me with their healing, and refer me others to me, or even when they simply acknowledge that I’m passionate about what I do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize my mother, Bettie Dean. By the age of 25, she was a hard working wife and mother of three from Mobile, Al with an unfinished high school education. Today my mother is a licensed professional with her Master’s degree. She instilled in her children the importance of being dependable, hardworking, having great character and Integrity. Because of those values I’ve become and continue to be an upstanding Black Woman who is dedicated to her goals and becoming the best version of herself while serving my community and being role model to those around me, especially young girls. Those instilled values are now apart of my core belief system and they continue to influence me
