We had the good fortune of connecting with Shante Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shante, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success has been that I keep myself and other women like me at the top of my mind always. When I started my business in 2018 I couldn’t find quality statement tees that appealed to me. There was no diversity in the brands and the existing ones weren’t appropriate for the workplace. African American women have a story to tell and opinions that we want to voice without being vulgar or filling sterotypical roles. DossCouture does honors diversity with quality, substance and style!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This branding business has not been easy. There was an increase in small businesses that did something similar to statement tees during the pandemic and in light of George Floyd. Seems like everyone had a message. The problem- The challenge is how do I express the messages, stay on trend but stay on brand as well? I consider myself a creative person so I am constantly thinking about what’s next, how can I express this and stay on brand with DossCouture.
You can’t jump from one cause to another and expect your brand your business to be respected and successful with so many moves.
Another challenge was what most people do – that is expect your business to thrive based on business from your family and friends. Not saying that they won’t support however you have to expand and find other followers/buyers and build your brand additionally with the people outside of your circle.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to Black Women! We are killing it! I make sure that I encourage and help women daily to be their very best. Empowered women empower women is my mantra. I live and breathe it daily. My family and circle of very close friends (too many to name- you know who you are) encouraged me from Day 1 to do what I love. Fashion is another passion. I was able to merge the two and start the DossCouture brand.
Kelly Hodges pushed me to have my first pop-up and start online sales. She was a tremendous help and continues to encourage me to push the brand.
Lastly, thanks to my husband and sons (I have 3) who deal with me daily! They are constantly stepping over tees, pressing shirts to fulfill orders and deliver them sometimes. Late nights plus hard work equals success. Thanks guys!
