We had the good fortune of connecting with Shantavia Farmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shantavia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After dealing with my own mental health issues and losing my sister to suicide, I saw fit to starting my nonprofit. I had been wanting to start a nonprofit for a while, so when Covid hit I was able to use the time to actually sit and plan. Losing my sister to suicide was definitely an eye opener. I realized that suicide was a topic that is often avoided and rarely discussed in the African American community. At the time, I didn’t really know who to turn to or how to cope with what had occurred. This pushed me to create this foundation to not only honor my sister but to also shine a light and educate others on the importance of mental health.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Shantia Alexandria Foundation is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization that was founded in May 2020. This organization was founded to honor the life of my sister, Shantia, who we lost to suicide. Our foundation provides access to different resources that will help someone struggling mentally. We host a number of events geared towards educating the Metro Atlanta area on the importance of mental health and how to support others. We believe that it is our duty to serve in the communities that we hold so near and dear to our hearts. Our mission is to create a safe place for people to come and express themselves freely. Our ultimate goal is to have a facility that will host support groups and activities such as Art, Music and Meditation classes. In addition to giving people access to mental health professionals in their community. We hope to reach the lives of those in need and break the stigma around mental health. We aim to teach people how to live mentally healthier lives and normalize receiving mental health support and healing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta has a lot of gems. Im a foodie, so definitely catching brunch with some good vibes and music (Garden Parc, Toast on Lenox). I also love nature, so taking a stroll/bike riding on the beltline or go to a nature preserve. On the late night vibe, we would probably go to 656 or Cru those are some of my really chill spots with good music and food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would just like to shout out my family, friends and everyone that has supported me throughout the years.
