We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanika Mulrain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanika, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson starting a nonprofit organization has taught me is your biggest supporters are strangers.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am naturally a nurturer and I always want to help people. It was no surprise to my family and friends that I ended up in a career that did just that, Nursing. I have been a nurse for over 5 years and I love it. Helping people in the hospitals and in the community brings me pure joy. It comes so easy. Nursing school came with many hurdles and sacrifices but well worth it. With my amazing support system, I completed school and moved forward to do what I love.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Things to do in the Atlanta area are so endless that I haven’t even did half of those things. Since living here, I have easily picked some favorites of the places I have been. Going to a brunch spot to get the day started is a must. Then I would head down to the Beltline. There are so many stores and restaurants along the Beltline to enjoy, plus the scenery is a bonus. Hiking Stone Mountain is super adventurous and fun. It gives for a great cardio workout. The night lounges in downtown Atlanta are very nice. It’s nice to have many places to choose from that provide a nice atmosphere to just vibe, like Lily White’s.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to my support system, my best friends Champayne, Ashley, Donyetta, and Erik. There were many occasions I wanted to give up in the beginning. They provided me with the constant push and encouragement I needed to keep going because of the many people I would and could impact. They believed in me and reminded me that people are constantly watching even when I didn’t think anyone recognized my hardwork. I would also like to thank my friend, Jacquise for his support. From one leader to another leader, he is such an inspirational individual. He has an amazing heart and his character is off the charts.
