Meet Shamiyah Dawkins | Nail technician, nail instructor, & business owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shamiyah Dawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shamiyah, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I don’t even know how to start. My life revolves around work. Even when I’m not working, I’m working. Don’t get me wrong though. I like it this way. I’ve always taken pride on keeping myself busy. Sometimes even sitting down on my phone or watching tv for a second makes me feel guilty cause I know there’s sooo many things I could be doing to better my business. Finding time to really dedicate to relaxing is an important goal of mine. I’ve been trying to not reply to clients after 6pm. I decreased my business hours and limited how many clients I take during the day. I got to the point where I was working so much that I wasn’t eating or even using the bathroom. That’s a minor improvement and I’m still definitely working on balancing everything.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a nail technician, I get to produce art everyday. I mean I literally do nails with an acrylic brush. I like to think that me believing that what I do is art is what separates me from other nail techs. I make each set my absolute best. My clients leave their appointments with more than just their nails done. They leave with a set of nails that I took my time to create to my best ability

I am most proud of the speed of my growth. I am such a cry baby and watching every thing happen for me has been such a blessing.

Most of my customer service skills and professionalism came from being a server. I think of my clients as guest. So I already had a really good start when I started my business. All of my clients are definitely a learning experience though. My goal is to improve everything about my business with every client and customer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my New York friends were coming to Atlanta to visit, I would take them to grande Lux cafe for breakfast, the ponce city roof top, for dinner 🙂 then oriental express for dinner (it’s a hibachi restaurant in vinings, ga) . I don’t go out much at all so I don’t have an itinerary of activities.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a long list of people who deserve recognition in my story. My boyfriend, parents, siblings, my friends, MY CLIENTS CAUSE I MF LOVE THEM, and honestly I’m just surrounded by support. For you guys mentioned that are reading, I love the hell out of y’all and thank you soooo much for everything you guys have done for me. Thank you to my clients for believing in me. Thank you for returning. Thank you giving me the confidence to keep going. Y’all the realest.
