We had the good fortune of connecting with Shamica Baxter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shamica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Years ago, I was faced with a challenge that is too familiar to many. Upon graduating from college with two undergraduate degrees, I faced multiple job rejections from companies within my career fields of psychology and communications. In a moment of confusion and despair, I asked myself “is a degree enough”?
Needing to work, I accepted a job as a warehouse associate at a temporary agency for 2 years before I gained knowledge to leverage myself into my career field. I then realized “Strategic Success” is necessary for all.
Although I had seen many companies in the community aid individuals in getting employment, I hadn’t seen any that provided resources for those who’d graduated from college, or aspired to go to college.
I have made it my mission to help and support this demographic I service in being educated in the areas of networking, goal setting, public speaking, and building meaningful relationships.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Baxter Initiative is a company that supports college students and graduates in getting into their career field. I’m excited because I am allowed to help and support individuals in their success. I’ve grown because of mentorship and guidance. It has not been easy. I’ve learned the building stage takes a lot of work and sacrifice. I want the world to know college students are capable of getting into their career fields. They just need support.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Botanic Gardens, The Pocket, Shelby Farms, Victorian Village, Brooks Museum of Memphis, and Memphis Heritage Trail.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this to anyone whose been overlooked, counted out, or underestimated. It’s our time now.
