We had the good fortune of connecting with Shameka Palmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shameka, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process on starting my own business began when I realized how much joy I had when I engaged in meditation, self-affirmations and holistic avenues to maintain my mental wellness. In 2018, I had the opportunity to learn about the seven main chakras (energy centers) in our body. In my teachings, I found that chakras (Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye and Crown) govern different aspects of our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Your chakras can either be blocked, overactive or balanced. I learned so much about myself in this process and found ways to balance my chakras that helped me function better in all aspects of my life. Once I found certain tools to aid me in this self-discovery, I created my business, Centered Chakras LLC in the fall of 2022. My goal is to educate people on the importance of tapping into your inner self for peace and alignment. I offer transformative tools such as sage, crystals, palo santo, and chakra cleansing sprays to enhance ones journey towards balance and harmony.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has taken on many pivots. I lived in Atlanta for 13 years before making a move to North Carolina. My time in Atlanta allowed me to explore my entrepreneurial side as I created the Atlanta Hip Hop Film Festival where we honored hip hop artists who transitioned into film. We hosted this three-day event from 2005-2007 and it was amazing as it was filled with film screenings, panels, creative events that ended with an awards ceremony on the third day. In 2008, the economy took a hit which impacted our sponsorships so, at that time I decided to move to NC to be closer to family. About three years into my move, I decided to take a huge risk…I joined the United States Air Force Reserves. My mom and sister both served in the Army and I too, wanted to offer something bigger than myself to the world. For me, it was perfect as I had the best of both worlds, military and civilian life. During this time, I went back to school and complete my bachelor’s degree in psychology. I also had the opportunity to join an organization as a human resources professional. I have been in the HR industry for over 10 years and although my career has taken many turns, I can see a clear trend…helping people. While working a 9-5pm, I am also able to pour into my business which again, I have the best of both worlds. It is certainly a balance but, truly rewarding.

The road has not been easy as I had to navigate as a single parent however, perseverance was always key. I allowed my passion to fuel me and even though I may have stumbled along the way, I remained focused. It is also, very important to surround yourself with people who want to see you win and who will encourage when you can’t encourage yourself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t live in Atlanta so I wouldn’t know the hottest spots anymore. But I can certainly say we are foodies so we are going to some great brunch spots with mimosas and hookah, dinner with crafted cocktails, get some yoga in, the sauna, do a sound bath and definitely listen to live music. With all the good eats and drinks, we will end it IV hydration drips.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, I certainly want to give credit to my spiritual wellness coach, Chasity Wilson with A Balanced Life Experience. I met Chasity around 2009 due to working together at a Salon & Spa but, she has since become a huge factor in my spiritual journey. She is a renowned massage therapist, spiritual coach, herbalist and sleep coach. She helps one dig deeper within themselves, as she believes we all have what we need internally to elevate as our best selves. She has taught me not to view things on the surface level but, to tap into my highest self and find out the root of where an emotion is evoking from. Once you get to the root, you’ll have a better grasp on what is driving the emotion/behavior and can address the cause appropriately.
