We had the good fortune of connecting with Shakeia Brodie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shakeia, how do you think about risk?
Risk has always been a calculated process for me. It was a big risk from moving from North Carolina to Georgia, entering a new career field, leaving my previous job, to opening my own practice. Of course I become nervous each time I have to take a risk and at times things become extremely bumpy however in the end each risk ultimately contributes to my growing success. One of my all time favorite mantras is “Growth and Comfort Cannot Coexist”. Each time I take a risk I am moving out of my comfort zone and closer to my personal and professional goals.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Arise Renewed Counseling, based in Norcross, GA. Additionally I am a Psychotherapist specializing in addiction, sexual issues, anxiety, and self-esteem. I am currently working towards my certification as a Sex Therapist and full licensure in North Carolina. I believe that what sets me and my practice apart is our vision of providing all clients a safe space to fully express themselves while gaining clarity and inner strength leading to a renewed sense of self. Arise Renewed Counseling is a Black Woman-Owned Mental Health practice that is inclusive and welcoming to all. What I’m most proud of is seeing the growth within my clients and the importance placed on being healthy mentally. I’m excited to see each chapter of my life unfold building towards the legacy for my sons. Being an entrepreneur has not been easy at all, especially as a single mom, and I’m FAR from where I know God has destined me to be. Knowing that I have two young black sons relying on me is my biggest motivation to overcome each and every challenge I face. I am grateful for my current journey and the many lessons I’m continuing to learn along the way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many exciting things to do in the area that composing a list was almost impossible. If I had to narrow it down for a week of activities, the itinerary would look something like this:
Sunday Brunch: Snooze or Roc south Cuisine
Monday: Ponce City Market: shopping and lunch (food court ), Skyline park roof top& Bar Vegan
Tuesday: Silverspot cinema or Aurora Cineplex for $5 movie Tuesdays
Wednesday: the Painted duck (bar, games) & The yard milkshake bar
Thursday: Kat’s Cafe ( a bar with open mic & live music night)
Friday: Apt 4B (bar/restaurant) & Old Mill Park for a Hike
Saturdays: The Battery in Smyrna for bars, games, and food
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been truly blessed with such amazing people throughout my life that there is no possible way to mention everyone by name. There are some who deserve recognition and praise for their endless support throughout my life journey. Without God, my parents (Steve, Miranda, and Sam), and my sons (Zachariah & Zaivier) I don’t know where I would be. I cannot verbalize the motivation, support, love, and guidance they give me daily. My Aunts (Annette, Lynne, and Ann) and Uncles (Dr. Charlie Shaw and Dr. Ralph Jackson) have supported me through all stages of my life journey and continue to support me like their own. My grandparents Charlie, Ruth, and Ruby (my guardian angels) and Rev. Dr. N.P. Brodie have always been my prayer warriors and sense of peace. My family and friends that may not be mentioned by name however they each hold a special place in my heart and are a contributor to my story. I love my entire tribe!
