We had the good fortune of connecting with Shae Shakur and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shae, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that there’s no growth without taking risk. If you want better for yourself, you have to challenge and apply yourself in order to reach your goals. I feel as though playing it safe to avoid risks is ideal. Your brain will convince you to that you shouldn’t try anything new, when in fact that risk could be that one move that will change your life in amazingly drastic way.

In my case, I’ve been brewing and creating ideas for years thinking about my business. Talking about starting a business was one thing, until I realized I’ve been talking for years. Yet no business. One day I decided to bet on myself. I made the risk of investing into my business. Investing hundreds of dollars during the pandemic was a scary case, especially since thousands of people has been laid off from their jobs.

Me trusting myself and taking that risk to invest and start my business kept me afloat during the pandemic. Not only that but my business is flourishing all thanks to taking the risk.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business Urban Beauty Avenue is a fun place for all 90s and 2000s lovers. Providing high quality cosmetics, accessories, and jewelry that will definitely take you on trip of nostalgia. What sets my business apart from others is that we shine light on Urban Pop Culture, and educate others through our products. Becoming personable with our supporters.

The process was not easy but it was well worth it. I’ve gained more knowledge on targeting my target audience, how to balance life and the work life, and also just being great business woman.

When people hear Urban Beauty Avenue, I want them to know that this brand is fun, exciting and nostalgic. You’ll have such a great experience that you wouldn’t have to contact customer service.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In my city theres alot of exciting things to do. I would take my friend to the Georgia Aquarium, rug making, live undergroung concerts and more. In Atlanta, we definitely have to get some wings. Lemon pepper of course, sea food, and the home made pasta is delightful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In a long journey of entrepreneurship there was definitely some people and resources that was helpful along the way. However, nothing beats the support that I’ve gotten from my mother. As chicle as that sounds.
I’ve been bitten by the entrepreneur bug since I was an pre-teen, and my mother supported every business idea that I’ve had. When it came to putting my business plan in motion, my mother was able to help me start my business with the financing and my overall brand development. So a big shoutout goes out to her.

In addition, I’ve read a book by Khila James called” How To Start A Cosmetic Brand” which was extremely helpful. It provided me with the ends and outs of how to market my business, sale funnels, and etc. Without her book, my business wouldn’t have had such an successful launch.
